The School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences is looking for a Postdoctoral Scholar to identify a topic for which new technologies are providing data such AUVs, eDNA, saildrones and link their results into models used for management.This a full-time, 12-month position located at the University of Washington in Seattle.
Estimates of fish population indices from traditional methods are often very imprecise and extremely personnel intensive to obtain. In addition, they do not provide estimates of absolute abundance. Meanwhile, in other areas of ocean research, and in robotics and computer vision research in general, huge technological gains are being made, pushed by rapidly increasing processing power and sensor development, which could be leveraged for updating population assessment methods
Responsibilities include the following:
Manage estimates of fish population guides from traditional often imprecise data.
Oversee technology expertise and fisheries expertise to foster an environment where a deeper understanding of fisheries challenges can provide possible technical solutions.
Move current monitoring practices toward more rigorous, safer, and less personnel-intensive results.
Develop and implement new sensors, software, or automation processes for data and fish population estimations.

PhD or foreign equivalent in Quantitative Ecology, Engineering, Applied Statistics or a related field.
Experience in conducting research in the field.
Familarity bridging science and engineering research.
Experience with fisheries-related research.
Ability to work in a collaborative setting.
