Title: Commercial Director
Reports to: Director of Operations
Basic Function: Provides leadership and cohesive support to staff in commercial division working with local businesses through an array of funding streams, initiatives and partnerships. Responsible for staff managing State of IL and City of Chicago business development contracts, staff managing two different Special Service Areas, and those working on new initiatives funded by foundations and other partners. Will participate on leadership team, and be able to contribute to development of strategy and vision for how business development supports overall economic development on the southwest side of Chicago.
Principal Job Duties and Responsibilities
Responsibilities must include, but are not limited to the following:
Provide daily leadership, support and accountability to commercial development team
Responsible for administration, financial management and day-to-day activities of all commercial contracts, including two Special Service Areas (SSA), equaling over $2 million budget. Responsibilities include oversight of day-to-day execution of work plan and dissemination of financials, in accordance with the SSA’s financial policies and approved budget, including payments to vendors, coordinating with outside auditors to conduct the annual financial audit, preparing all necessary regulatory filings, ensuring all deliverables, reports and compliance needs are submitted in a timely manner.
Ensure of vendors and subcontractors including supplemental sanitation, holiday lighting, and marketing and events
Develop and maintain critical external relationships that support the commercial development team and work.
Manage all data related to commercial development GSDC is engaged with – overseeing internal collection and analyzing outside sources to identify trends, threats and opportunities.
Lead SSA team on execution of SSA work plan, and in scheduling, preparing for SSA Commissioner meetings
Serve on local boards and committees to be a part of community GSDC serves
Provide professional development opportunities and feedback to each team member as a way to care for and develop each
Participate on leadership team, contributing to development of strategy and vision that allows business development to support overall economic development on the southwest side of Chicago.
Work closely with other GSDC agency team members to create a cohesive work environment and to foster a climate of camaraderie and support.
Qualifications and Experience
The successful candidate for this position will have:
at least three (3) years’ experience working in one or more of the following areas: nonprofit organization management, economic development programs/initiatives, constituent services, or directing small business outreach and assistance programs.
A Bachelor’s degree is preferred.
Substantial administrative, fiscal and contract management experience
Excellent interpersonal, organizational and management skills, and the ability to connect and communicate with a wide variety of stakeholders
A demonstrated record of leadership and success in strategic thinking, planning, and problem solving
Experience planning, coordinating, and leading events, including the supervision of vendors and volunteers
High level of comfort using digital technology
Advanced experience using a multitude of software, and data base systems.
Strong writing skills and the ability to produce concise and comprehensive written materials ranging from annual reports, press releases, newsletter content, and general communications to stakeholders
Understanding of City of Chicago government and its agencies, SSA’s, Small Business Development Centers (SBDC) of Illinois, economic development, and community stakeholder engagement.
Fluency in Spanish is a plus.
