ABOUTTHEDEPARTMENT: Student Housing & Residential Life (SH&RL) provides an environment that supports and empowers students to learn and grow in their residential communities and beyond. CSUMB's residential communities are capable of housing more than 50% of the student body with a capacity of more than 2,500 bed spaces on Main Campus in residence halls, suites and apartments, and 1,350 bed spaces on East Campus in apartments. On-campus housing for individual students in Main Campus and East Campus as well as on East Campus for students with families is a significant recruitment and retention tool for the University. POSITIONSUMMARY: Under the general direction of the Associate Director of Residential Life, the Assistant Director of Residential Life is responsible for assisting in the development and implementation of the department's efforts focused on providing residents and staff members an environment rooted in belonging, inclusion, and community development. The Assistant Director of Residential Life will be charged with the oversight of half of our residential areas spanning across five communities which may encompass traditional residence halls, suite-style living, and apartments. This position is responsible for providing administrative and management support to the Associate Director of Residential Life and to support SH&RL's mission, vision, and values. The primary areas of responsibility are staff supervision, collaboration with campus partners, Residential Life personnel recruitment, development and training, socially just efforts and policies, administration, large-scale events, operations, and customer service. ESSENTIALDUTIESANDRESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to, the following: Supervision/Oversight/Leadership:
Directly supervise, train, develop, and evaluate two to six full time live-in professional staff members spanning across five residential areas.
Indirectly oversee student staff positions such as but not limited to, Graduate Student Assistants, Resident Advisors (RAs), and Student Assistants (SAs) spanning across 14 on-campus housing buildings as well as an apartment complex providing over 400+ apartments in East Campus.
Serve as a member of the leadership team for the department and assist in critical decisions that impact residential students.
Serve in the Administrator On-Call emergency crisis response rotation for SH&RL.
Approve and evaluate all financial expenditures in assigned areas for program budgets, and oversight of area program budget process totaling approximately $35,000.
Approve and review all professional development fund submittals from direct reports, an allocation of approximately $5,000.
Facilitate and assist in the resolution of staff and student concerns and emergencies which may disrupt the normal routine of the residential community.
Assist with the ongoing growth and development of multifaceted programming development which may include but is not limited to Living Learning Programs (LLP), Academic Initiatives, First Year Housing programs, transfer experience, athletics, international programs, graduate housing, and family housing.
Department Staff Recruitment, Training, and Development:
This position is responsible for the development and creation of Residential Life's professional staff recruitment, training, and development processes such as, but not limited to, recruitment marketing materials, standard hiring documents, onboarding training and continued development tracks.
Provide direct oversight of the coordination and execution of student staff selection and other departmental committees.
Assist and collaborate in building the development of intentional residential experience models in support of academic initiatives
Coordinate the formal evaluation process for live-in professional and paraprofessional staff members in Residential Life.
Develop and organize efforts toward professional staff retreats, onboarding, and continuous training alongside the Associate Director of Residential Life.
Lead department efforts and initiatives toward creating equity, inclusion, and diversity in the workplace for both professional staff and student leaders.
Serve as additional liaison for students and identified SH&RL campus partnership populations, including, but not limited to: international students, student athletes, students with disabilities, at-risk students, former foster youth and other identified populations.
Act as an additional contact for campus partner populations when requesting information.
Serve as a resource for SH&RL around specific needs and issues for campus partner populations.
Act as an additional point of contact to any campus partners when working through residential projects, concerns, or agreements.
Work in partnership with Assignments Specialists and Associate Director for Operations & Finance regarding the assignments and early arrival support for campus partner populations.
Serve as the primary point of contact and chair of various department committees as assigned.
Identify issues in area or departmental concern and take initiative to resolve or report them and assist in the identification of potential solutions.
Keep a strategic focus on partnership building across campus as the department and University continues to grow.
Promote and maintain an atmosphere of excellent internal and external customer service within the SH&RL program.
Develop, collaborate, and manage large-scale programming and social events across campus housing areas and potentially University-wide.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Successful candidates will possess: a working knowledge of practice, procedure, management, and activities of SH&RL Program. This candidate will have substantial understanding of student development theory, group dynamics, and current issues and trends in higher education; an understanding of student development, staff development, leadership development, multicultural issues. This candidate must have the ability to interpret and apply program rules and regulations; ability to initiate and use resourcefulness in planning work assignments; ability to advise students individually and in groups on routine matters and complex matters; ability to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with faculty, administrators, student organizations, and others in committee work. Must possess excellent written and oral communication skills. Must have the ability to sensibly manage emergencies and respond diplomatically and effectively to complaints. Ability to analyze complex situations accurately and adopt effective courses of action; ability to determine appropriate courses of action and proper techniques to utilize while engaged with individuals in personal interactions of an argumentative or sensitive nature; ability to interpret and evaluate descriptions and explanations of problems brought forward by individuals or student organizations; analyze and define the problem, draw valid conclusions and project consequences of various alternative courses of action. Ability and skill to supervise the work of multiple direct reports and effectively recommend personnel actions; strong problem solving and conflict resolution skills; train and evaluate the productivity and performance of employees; and analyze situations and take corrective action. Ability to carry out a variety of professionally complex assignments without detailed instructions.
Education and Experience: Bachelors Degree from an accredited college/university AND at least two years of experience managing and coordinating residential programs. Working knowledge of the practice, procedures, management and activities of a Housing & Residential Life program. Additional experience beyond the minimum requirement which demonstrates that the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above may be substituted for up to two years of the education on a year-for-year basis.
Specialized Skills: Must be available to work evenings and weekends when necessary. Advanced fluency in using various standard office software packages such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint. Demonstrated technical literacy with electronic mail, mail merges, data entry, electronic scheduling, and internet communication software. Ability to work in an occasional high-pressure environment. Ability to operate a wide variety of office equipment and independently troubleshoot problems. Demonstrated experience that clearly provides evidence of the knowledge and skills required to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements identified above are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or abilities required. Ability to complete web-based training in Defensive Driving and continue to meet the established driving standards as a condition of employment.
Preferred Qualifications: Additional experience as live-in staff and Masters Degree in College Student Personnel, Higher Education Administration, Counseling, Sociology, or a related field highly desirable; demonstrated supervisory and leadership experience; experience advising student groups; demonstrated understanding of and commitment to the CSUMB Vision Statement and the core values of mutual respect, collaboration and service orientation, multiculturalism and diversity, community service and institutional excellence; experience working with a multicultural population; familiarity performing community service learning.

Compensation and Benefits:

The salary for this position is $5,417.00 per month. This is an exempt position and as such is not eligible for the overtime provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act. Benefits include medical, dental, vision and life insurance benefits, contributory retirement plan, TSA (403b), 13 paid holidays per year and other benefits. The University Corporation at Cal State Monterey Bay also provides access to affordable employee housing.
