ABOUT THE CANDIDATE AND POSITION
This position is an excellent opportunity for an individual with the right mix of experience to lead a team that engages communities and stakeholders with University scholarship to address the critical issues facing communities across Minnesota and beyond. We seek a strong, visionary leader who will enhance the current partnerships, vision and direction for the Center, while maintaining a vibrant, efficient and innovative organization culture.
With a Ph.D. in a related field, the successful candidate brings experience in leadership and management for program design, evaluation and applied research related to programs and initiatives in community development for communities of place, identity and/or interest.
Having contributed broadly to community-building initiatives and community development in their professional career, the successful candidate will bring an enthusiasm for leading and managing a talented group of faculty and staff dedicated to the mission-oriented work of helping communities choose and create their desired future.
A strong history and passion for collaboration will ensure the efforts of the Center are aligned with other departments and units at the University and in Extension; other state cooperative extension programs; and mission-related partners (e.g. foundations, government agencies, etc.).
RESPONSIBILITIES AND PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS
Provide visionary leadership for the Center’s program leaders, campus faculty and specialists, educators and administrative support staff to create impactful programs and initiatives, conduct meaningful applied research and build strong partnerships and collaborations in support of the missions of the University of Minnesota, University of Minnesota Extension, and Extension Center for Community Vitality
Nurture a culture of innovation and inclusion to assure efforts are based on community needs, priorities and foci, and that resources are made available in an appropriate, effective manner
In collaboration with Extension, develop and implement a strategic plan for the Center that focuses the work and organization development of the Center
Further the Center as a thought leader in the field of community development in Minnesota and the nation
Support and stimulate scholarship through engaged and applied research, evaluation studies and program evaluation related to community development
Cultivate and build on a culture of social entrepreneurship, grant-seeking and development that leads to greater public value and a balanced funding portfolio
Provide fiscal oversight and management of the Center’s complex budget of federal, state, sponsored funding, program contracts and gifts
Promote collaboration across collegiate units and facilitate productive connections within the Center and between colleges, departments, centers, Extension educators and faculty with the Center’s faculty, specialists and educators
Maintain an organizational and educational climate that actively promotes and respects diversity, affirmative action and inclusiveness in employment (e.g., hiring, retention, etc.) and in programs initiatives and applied research
Encourage and support the use of distance educational technology and program management technology consistent with achieving and demonstrating impacts and/or efficiencies
Ensure that evaluation is done for program improvement, accountability and reporting of outcomes and impacts
Maintain and create connections among land grant Extension institutions to share resources and establish Extension as a vital resource for communities
Maintain relevant and productive working relationships with public and private partners at national, regional, state and local levels
Serve as a member of the Dean’s Leadership Council to help set policies and system-wide coordination assuring that the Extension Center for Community Vitality contributes to the vision and mission of Extension and the University of Minnesota
LOCATION OF POSITION
The Associate Dean for the Extension Center for Community Vitality will be located in Coffey Hall on the St. Paul campus of the University of Minnesota.
This position will report administratively to the Dean of Extension. Performance will be evaluated annually based on the position responsibilities.
This is an immediate full-time, three-year fixed term appointment in the University’s academic administrative staff category with the title of Associate Dean, (Job Code 9312). An administrative review will be conducted after the initial three-year term. Reappointment will depend on performance, organization needs, and availability of funds. This is a non-tenured position unless the candidate hired is already a current University of Minnesota tenured faculty member.
This person will be responsible for maintaining professional competencies.
Travel (in-state, national, and international) is necessary to perform the responsibilities of this position. This person may be expected to use a personal vehicle and have appropriate insurance for travel, with reimbursement for mileage and subsistence provided according to University policy.

A Ph.D. in community development, rural sociology or sociology, community or social psychology, leadership development, applied economics, planning, public affairs, or other programs emphasizing these and related fields.
Five (5) years of relevant combined professional experience in the areas of community development, including but not limited to: higher education, cooperative extension, foundations, community-university partnerships, community-based organizations, or related fields
Demonstrated three (3) years of successful administrative experience in an education program or service-driven nonprofit, to include supervision, fiscal management of considerable amounts and various funding sources, and revenue generation
Demonstrated success working with diverse communities, audiences and staff
Successful grant seeking, writing, and management experience
Demonstrated leadership through development and implementation of vision, team building, collaboration, facilitation, and conflict resolution
Effective oral and written communication skills in English
Professional experience in Extension, outreach education, or community-university partnerships
Building, developing, engaging cross-functional teams to reach organizational goals
Contributing to scholarship in the field of Community Development (including leadership and civic engagement, tourism and economic development)
Creating and maintaining effective relationships with external partners, such as federal and state government and agencies; tribal governments/Sovereign nations; foundations; local governments; regional planning and development organizations; or other relevant partners. This includes cultivating public relations, media relations and communication efforts
Garnering and managing resources for Community Vitality programs, initiatives or applied research through fees, grants and/or gifts to include multi-million dollar budgets with multiple funding sources
Cultural competency with internal and external teams and partners
Experience with all stages of program development, including: needs assessment, program delivery (both in-person and through technology) and evaluation, and an understanding of technology and its application to adult learning
Fluency in a second language other than English
