Research faculty engage in, are responsible for, manage, and/or execute significant areas of research or scholarship. They may serve as principal or co-principal investigators on grants or contracts, manage postdoctoral fellows and their research projects or supervise graduate or undergraduate student research. Research Faculty hold full-time, non-tenure track positions. While they may participate in instructional programs, such as lectures or demonstrations, they are not assigned regular teaching duties.
CAMPUS SPECIFIC INFORMATION
The CUNY Advanced Science Research Center is a new cutting-edge research institution located in New York City, bringing together five Initiatives whose research areas span many length scales: Structural Biology, Nanoscience, Photonics, Neuroscience, and Environmental Science. The Structural Biology Initiative (SBI) features seven tenure-track and research faculty members, pursuing research problems across biological and chemical topics using techniques as diverse as X-ray diffraction, cryo-EM, NMR, solution biophysics, and advanced microscopy. The SBI also hosts state-of-the-art core facilities in three different areas: nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy, mass spectrometry (MS), and X-ray crystallography.
The Structural Biology Initiative seeks a Facility Manager/Research Assistant Professor for the X-ray Macromolecular Crystallography Facility, which is already equipped with a Rigaku Alchemist DT liquid handler, two ARI Gryphon crystallization robots, and two Rigaku Minstrel DT crystal imagers at room temperature and 4°C. The selected candidate will be responsible not only for directing day-to-day operations of the facility in concert with users from the ASRC and externally, but also for developing an independent research program that leverages emerging technologies in X-ray crystallography. This position reports to the SBI Initiative Director.
The ASRC is located in upper Manhattan, immediately adjacent to the New York Structural Biology Center (NYSBC), a consortium of CUNY and eight other New York academic institutions with world-class cryo-EM, NMR, and X-ray facilities on-site and at Brookhaven National Laboratory. BNL, located just 70 miles from the ASRC, includes a newly constructed synchrotron, National Synchrotron Light Source II, which opened in 2015. NSLS-II is now the brightest synchrotron light source in the United State, offering X-rays that are 10,000x brighter than the original NSLS. The ASRC Structural Biology Initiative has access to several cutting-edge microfocus beamlines equipped for automated crystal handling and data collection at NSLS-II, including the NYX beamline via CUNY's membership in NYSBC and the AMX and FMX beamlines via proposals.
Duties include but are not limited to:
Actively participates in collaborative research within the ASRC.
Actively seeks new collaborative projects within the CUNY system and externally.
Contributes to dissemination of results through workshops, seminars, and publications.
Contributes to the planning of extensions or updates of the facility to achieve optimal research capabilities.
Oversees the day-to-day operation of the Macromolecular Crystallization Facility.
Trains users from the ASRC, other CUNY campuses, and outside of CUNY to use the facility and the equipment.
Maintains equipment in the facility.
Serves as liaison with crystallographers at City College, the SBI, and the NYSBC to coordinate use of beamline time.
Serves as a liaison with beamline scientists at NSLS-II to coordinate data collection and experimental setup.
Helps users perform remote X-ray data collections at NSLS-II and elsewhere.
At times travels to NSLS-II or MacCHESS, both accessible by car or by public transit, for on-site X-ray data collections.
Works with crystallographers at other New York City institutions to create and manage a Beamline Access Group for more regular access to the AMX and FMX beamlines at NSLS-II.
Coordinates collection of facility user fees with SBI administrators.
Manages the facility's stocks of crystallography reagents and consumables.
Assists in the management of the ASRC biomolecular spectroscopy core, including Microscale Thermophoresis and Circular Dichroism instrumentation.
Assists users to process X-ray diffraction data, including data reduction, phasing, and initial model building.
Attends relevant local meetings such as the NSLS-II Users' Meeting, New York Structural Biology Discussion Group, etc. to stay abreast of current and new beamline capabilities, including automated and in situ data collection, high-throughput small-molecule fragment soaking, room-temperature and multitemperature data collection, etc.
Performs other duties as assigned.

Ph.D. in area(s) of expertise or equivalent. Also required are success in carrying out research and ability to advise and/or oversee the direct work of others.
A preferred candidate should have:
Ph.D. involving X-ray crystallography of biological macromolecules.
Two to three years of experience with macromolecular X-ray crystallography.
Valid driver's license for occasional travel to nearby synchrotrons that are more easily accessible by car than public transit; note that car ownership is not required.
Familiarity with using liquid handling robots to crystallize proteins or other macromolecules.
Experience collecting X-ray data at a synchrotron.
A strong understanding of the principles behind protein crystallization and X-ray diffraction.
Excellent communication and organizational skills.
Familiarity with command line operations in Unix or similar systems.
