Program Director, Machine Learning Department-2014081
Are you passionate about helping governments and nonprofits be more effective? We are currently searching for a Data Science/AI/ML for Social Good Program Director who will help lead our efforts to use AI, machine learning, and data science to have a positive impact on society. Our interdisciplinary group bridges the Machine Learning Department and Heinz College of Information Systems and Public Policy at Carnegie Mellon University in Pittsburgh and works at the intersection of research, practice, and education to improve society with this rapidly-developing technical toolkit. We are looking for someone who will build and maintain partnerships with governments and non-profit organizations, see project collaborations through from inception and scoping to communicating with partners about results, and provide input into the strategy, budget, and priorities of the group.
Your core responsibilities will include:
Build and maintain relationships with external project partners (government agencies, non-profits, researchers) and coordinate multi-stakeholder working groups;
Scope and oversee the progress of several projects related to economic development, public health, education, environment, criminal justice, and international development in partnership with these partners, communicating with non-technical stakeholders;
Collaborate and provide support for an interdisciplinary team of computer scientists, statisticians and social scientists to keep them focused on achieving specific project objectives and development tasks;
Oversee the creation of project deliverables, assigning tasks to team members, running sprints, ensuring accountability within the team, and writing grant reports in a fast moving environment;
Budget and track resources across projects;
Coordinate and organize events, workshops, and meetings related to projects and socially-focused AI and machine learning work more generally;
Contribute to a culture of curiosity, rigor, and fun within the team.
Master's degree required (equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered), preferably in the sciences, social sciences, public policy, business or other relevant field;
Experience working on technical projects with governments, non-profits, or similar organizations and a passion for making a social impact;
Comfort with communicating about technical topics with non-technical stakeholders;
5+ years of overall experience in project/product management, consulting, and leading technical teams;
Hands-on experience working on data science, statistics, AI, or machine learning projects is a plus;
Ability to balance competing priorities, accounting for deadlines, budget consideration, and resources;
Experience with data science workflows and software engineering methodologies, including online project management tools (e.g. Trello, Github);
Solid organizational skills including attention to detail and multi-tasking skills;
