Woman Made Gallery in Pilsen, now in its 28th year, aims to cultivate, promote and support the work of female-identified artists by providing exhibition opportunities and public programs that invite discussion about what feminism means today. WMG welcomes the participation of people of all gender expressions and orientations as artists and program participants, members and supporters.
This is a part-time role, responsible for the successful leadership of the organization, which includes managing the gallery’s day-to-day operations to execute a schedule of nine shows per calendar year. The ED will have talents across marketing, fundraising, event planning and execution, managing two part-time staff, and developing strategic partnerships.
The Executive Director (ED) should be a dynamic leader, able to connect people to the WMG mission, generate support, and build community connections. The ED is also highly organized and exceptional at prioritizing and delegating. The role requires close collaboration with a working board. This is less a curatorial position, and more an opportunity to lead a community-based and mission-driven gallery. The ED will understand the need for and fully support WMG’s mission to expand women’s voices in the art world.
Applicants should fully understand the revenue model for WMG, which relies on fee-for-entry juried group exhibitions and membership fees, in addition to event revenue, grants, donations, and art sales. The ED will be responsible for maintaining the revenue model of WMG in alignment with the Board of Directors’ strategic direction.
Areas of responsibility:
Serve as the chief spokesperson for WMG; communicate the value of women’s contributions in the arts with a focus on diversity and the role the arts can serve in the pursuit of social justice
Identify opportunities for WMG to further its mission
Develop effective working relationships within the community to ensure support for the constituencies that WMG serves
Board Relationships and Volunteer Management
Foster effective teamwork between the Board, Executive Director and staff
Provide timely updates to the Board on new gallery events, sales, and external relations
Participate with the Board of Directors in developing annual strategic plan to guide the organization
Co-Chair the Programs Committee, working with Board members to create compelling call-for-entry juried group exhibitions and related programs
Effectively engage members, board, and other volunteers to help achieve the goals of the organization
Financial Management and Fundraising
Prepare and manage organization’s annual budget; monitor monthly cash flow
Manage contracted bookkeeper and their preparation of monthly revenue and expenditure report
Develop and execute annual revenue and fundraising plans
Coordinate Board of Directors’ giving; oversee annual appeals and other fundraising campaigns
Carry out individual donor meetings/solicitations; engage Board members in process
Identify new sources and steward existing funding from corporations, small businesses, foundations, and government
Manage grant applications and reporting
Exhibitions and Program Management
Implement exhibitions and programming that supports the strategic direction of WMG.
Manage exhibitions schedule of nine exhibition cycles per calendar year
Publicize calls in a timely manner; track entries and correspond with artists, jurors, and curators
Oversee staff and volunteers who install shows, receive, and return artwork
Maximize opportunities for WMG members to exhibit and sell their work
Seek sponsorships or philanthropic funds to support up to two annual invitational exhibitions
Oversee the efficient and effective day-to-day operation of the organization
Manage part-time gallery staff and volunteers for effective program delivery
Implement a performance management process for staff
Work with WMG's accountant and bookkeeper to ensure that WMG complies with payroll, taxation, and insurance requirements
Maintain WMG donor/member database; track and acknowledge donations and membership renewals
With Board Members and Volunteers, plan and execute fundraising and friend-raising events with an eye towards maximizing revenue and exposure
Liaise with Literary Series curator(s) and other community groups to develop and execute gallery and off-site events related to exhibitions
Ensure adequate staff and volunteer support for execution of all WMG events
The ideal candidate will be able to demonstrate:
A minimum of four years of nonprofit management experience with progressive responsibility
Experience working with a nonprofit Board of Directors
Excellent interpersonal, public speaking, and writing skills; an enthusiasm for building external relationships
Successful fundraising experience that includes the acquisition of gifts from individuals, foundations, and businesses/corporations
Existing personal connections within diverse arts communities in Chicago
Strong planning, financial management, and project management skills
Demonstrated ability to develop and maintain productive working relationships with board members, organizational members, donors, and staff
High proficiency in Microsoft Office, Google Apps, database management; excellent administrative skills
A love for and knowledge of the fine arts, and a strong belief in WMG’s mission to expand women’s voices in the art world
Flexibility, creativity, initiative, and innovation
$30,000 per year, salaried position
Part-time: 20-25 hours per week
The gallery is open Thursday-Friday 12-6 pm, Saturday-Sunday 12-4 pm, and by appointment. Executive Director may schedule staff to cover gallery hours as budget permits.
Evenings and weekend hours are required for regular Board meetings, gallery opening/closing receptions, and special events.
