Located in Arlington, Virginia, the Association of Fundraising Professionals (AFP) has inspired global change and supported efforts that generated over $1 trillion. AFP's nearly 30,000 individual and organizational members raise over $100 billion annually, equivalent to one-third of all charitable giving in North America and millions more around the world.
You will ensure the successful planning, implementation, and management of AFP publishing and content initiatives including the Advancing Philanthropy magazine, AP Perspectives columns, books, research reports and briefs, and content anthologies. Manage all aspects of Advancing Philanthropy, AFP’s quarterly membership magazine, in its print and digital formats. Contribute to AFP’s long-term vision to create a richer and more vibrant Advancing Philanthropy website experience. Write and edit materials for a variety of AFP purposes, including potentially grant proposals, speeches, website and social media content, online newsletters, correspondence, and other items for various audiences.
Reports to the Vice President, Marketing, Communications and Public Policy, and works closely with other AFP staff, contractors, volunteers, vendors and service providers.
What you will do
Provide strategic direction and hands-on management of AFP publishing and content initiatives including Advancing Philanthropy magazine, AP Perspectives columns, books, research reports and briefs, content anthologies, online resources, and other initiatives.
Advancing Philanthropy (“Magazine”) production management: Hands-on management of all aspects of Magazine production to ensure publication of each quarterly issue within specified deadlines. Conceives editorial direction and recruits freelance writers and other contributors. Guides the work of writers, copywriters, and designers. Develop and maintain the production schedule. Work with the printer and digital edition vendor to ensure on-time publication and distribution to AFP members and subscribers. Work with stakeholders including the media sales team to create annual media kit and facilitate advertising sales and placements. Help ensure effective cross-marketing within the Magazine of other AFP programs, products, and services.
Manages other AFP publishing and content initiatives including AP Perspectives, columns, books, research reports and briefs, content anthologies, online resources, and other initiatives. In collaboration with AFP staff, volunteers, and other stakeholders, conceives strategic, tactical, and business direction. Manage day-to-day activities and relationships in support of these publishing initiatives.
Manage budgets related to publishing and content initiatives and ensures financial accountability and stewardship. Analyze expenses and make recommendations for change. Prepares the Magazine’s annual Statement of Ownership.
Conceive editorial direction, themes, and content ideas, working in cooperation with other stakeholders including AFP leadership, staff, and volunteer advisors and contributors. Create editorial calendars and other guidelines relevant to AFP publishing and content initiatives. Recruit and manage subject matter experts, freelance writers, and other contributors. Stay current with issues and trends affecting fundraising and philanthropy.
Develop and write editorial and other content as needed. Copy edits all articles and proofread all pages from designers and printers to ensure consistent voice and overall quality. Write and edit materials for a variety of documents for AFP, including grant proposals, content for website and social media, publications, online newsletters, and other items.
Manage the creative development and design process related to AFP publishing and content initiatives, including content conception, themes art, page layouts, cover designs, etc. Works with designers to develop concepts for covers, find art, and write cover copy. Manages all aspects through final production and printing/posting.
Leverage the knowledge, expertise, and contributions of AFP staff, volunteers, subject matter experts, partners, and others in developing AFP publishing and content initiatives. Serves as liaison with CFI’s Publishing/Resource Advisory Committee and the Research Council.
Other duties and special projects as assigned.
May require occasional travel and weekend work.
What you need to be successful
Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience.
Ideally 8-10 years of progressive responsibility in publishing or communications. Direct experience producing magazines, journals, or other professional publications required.
Nonprofit/association background preferred.
