The Workers' Rights Institute ("WRI") is the newest addition to Georgetown Law's Centers and Institutes. These institutes and centers play an important role in shaping public policy and debate through lectures, conferences, and symposia; policy analyses; student engagement; and other programs and projects. Among the goals of WRI is to be recognized broadly as a resource, facilitator, and educator and serve as a liaison and connector of constituent groups upon which many will depend for providing accurate information through our publications, websites, clearinghouse, research, and convenings.
The Associate Director will play a critical role in establishing and overseeing the programs and projects to be undertaken by WRI. Under the direction of and in collaboration with the Executive Director, s/he will assist with strategy and network building, research projects and initiative advancement, grant and funding support, communications, and general administration of the WRI. The incumbent will represent WRI at conferences and events, serving as a liaison and connector with external partners and collaborators, such as with state, local, and federal officials, grassroots community and labor organizers, with faculty and Georgetown senior administration, funders, and other academic and nonprofit partners. Additional responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Strategy and Network Building
Identifies critical issues where the Institute could potentially have an impact on policy and be able to influence political discourse.
Strategizes on appropriate actions to maximize the possibility of impact and influence.
Develops collaborations with thought leaders and potential influencers in conjunction with the Executive Director, serving as a liaison between external constituencies and the Institute.
Manages the logistical organization of Institute programs and events (both professional/external and student-focused), supporting events and meetings.
Oversees management of the Institute's financial transactions (reimbursement, invoices, monthly budget records, purchases).
Assists with the development of operational structure, hiring actions, and management, as well as oversight of student workers (research assistants and interns).
Research Projects and Initiative Advancement
Identifies areas of research that could be pursued to advance the Institute's goals.
Manages research and analysis, as well as project organization and external engagement on assigned topic.
Handles budget review as it relates to project funding.
Grant and Funding Support
Drafts and develops grant proposals and engages with outside partners for business development, as supervised by the Executive Director.
Identifies and coordinates with potential funders to seek and secure additional resources to advance the Institutes' initiatives, including to implement policy recommendations and enhance WRI's capacity to engage in action linked to these initiatives.
Oversees administrative aspects of all grants and fundraising initiatives.
Develops content for a variety of communication mediums (website, social media, newsletters) with the input of the Executive Director.
Maintains the Institute's online presence (website, social media accounts) with support from and in conjunction with the Law Center's Communications Office.
Maintains the Institute's contact database.
Advanced degree (MA or JD)
1 to 3 years of relevant experience in the areas of either workers' rights advocacy, employment law or labor law
Demonstrated strength in research, writing, computer skills, editing, analytic, and public speaking skills
Strong interpersonal skills, professionalism and sound judgment
Project management experience
Experience working with diverse populations
Fundraising and/or grant writing experience
Experience working on workers' rights and/or poverty issues related to planning or policy, research and analysis, or other relevant disciplines.
Fluency in Spanish
