The Capuchin Franciscan Western America Province seeks a Director of Development to steward its major donors and to invigorate its development efforts through the coordination of strategic endeavors with the Capuchin Council and key stakeholders.
About the Position:
The Director of Development will be a passionate and personable individual dedicated to the mission and values of the Capuchin Franciscans. The Director will personally represent the Capuchins in development relationships with current and potential benefactors and invite them to support the work of the province. He/She will work in close collaboration with the Provincial Minister, develop strategic endeavors, and cultivate and solicit major donors. The Director will create stewardship processes and evaluate key metrics. He/She will expand initiatives for both annual- and planned-giving programs, coordinate direct mail, and supervise annual events, including a golf tournament.
The ideal candidate will accomplish this by connecting the mission of the Capuchins, the joy of the Catholic faith and the service of those in need with the philanthropic objectives of others. The Director will follow a proven model of encouraging benefactors’ own relationship with Christ, understanding their needs and charitable objectives, and inviting them to align their goals in support of the Capuchins’ mission. A strong candidate will possess exceptional communication skills, have interpersonal maturity, and have demonstrated success with major donor cultivation and solicitation. He/She will embody a strong vision for a healthy fundraising culture, have experience with management, be able to effectively utilize fundraising tools and metrics to drive strategy, and be comfortable taking initiative to implement new programs.
This full-time position requires up to 30% travel throughout the province for in-person meetings with major donors, prospective donors and friars, and to represent the Capuchin Friars. The Director will be based in California, preferably near one of its major communities in the Bay Area, Los Angeles, or Solvang. The Director will report directly to the Provincial Minister. Salary is competitive, commensurate with experience, and includes a full benefits package.
The Director of Development’s primary responsibilities will include but not be limited to the following:
Oversee the development department and coordinate strategic initiatives.
Oversee all major donors, including personal caseload that requires 15-20 in-person meetings per month and travel through the province.
Identify prospective donors, foundations, and partnerships.
Implement and oversee key performance metrics.
Ensure accurate recording of meetings, notes, and gifts, including a quarterly report for all gifts.
Oversee development communications and quarterly newsletter.
Plan annual golf tournament fundraising event.
Work in collaboration with Provincial Council by presenting regularly at Council meetings.
Evaluate the departmental performance quarterly to identify areas and methods for growth.
Represent the Capuchin Franciscan Western America Province in the community.
3+ years of relevant fundraising and nonprofit experience is required, including experience directly cultivating a caseload of donors, and, preferably, have proven track record of raising $300,000+ annually.
Passionate love for Christ and commitment to the Catholic faith.
Demonstrate close personal alignment with the Capuchin’s mission and values.
Ability to take initiative, lead projects, and inspire others.
Ability to collaborate with co-workers to drive decision-making.
Superior writing, speaking, and presentation skills.
Strong ability to communicate the mission and build personal relationships with friars and prospective and current major donors.
Very organized in a fast-paced environment.
Experience managing a small team.
Familiarity with development moves management (Raiser’s Edge is a plus).
Ability to travel up to 30%.
About Capuchin Franciscans Western America Province
The BSA is a national organization that instills adventure, family, and character through scouting programs that helps place young people in the middle of action to prepare them to make ethical decisions for both today and throughout their lives. Founded in 1910, the BSA is one of the largest youth organization in the United States, with approximately 2.3 million youth participants and 1 million adult volunteers. In recent years, BSA has updated policies and programs to be more inclusive, and girls can participate in all programs at this time. The mission remains the same despite any policy changes—“to prepare young people to make ethical and moral choices over their lifetime by instilling in them the values of the Scout Oath and Law.” The Scout Oath includes in order of responsibility: duty to God and country, duty to other people, and duty to self.
Grand Canyon Council is based in Phoenix and is legally and financially independent of BSA and operates five camps in the state of Arizona that serve as outdoor learning laboratories for Scouts.
