Under the supervision of ICAP's Deputy Director for Communications and Content Strategy, the Communications Officer (CO) will research, write, and disseminate compelling content that raises awareness and increases support for ICAP, a global health leader situated at Columbia University that works to improve the health of families and communities. The CO will work with staff across ICAP's New York City headquarters and country offices abroad to ensure ICAP's mission, messages, and accomplishments are communicated in creative and strategic ways to a wide variety of stakeholders.
This position is grant-funded.
Tell compelling, engaging, emotionally resonant stories about the impact of ICAP's work through full range of media, including print, digital, and video (5%)
Promote specific ICAP projects through strong, accurate storytelling that increases understanding, support, and potential to leverage work for new business (5%)
Document ongoing field work with photos and video, either directly or through management of consultants (5%)
Scan ICAP's global work with journalistic acumen to discover stories of interest to ICAP supporters, partners, and stakeholders, and develop those stories (5%)
Conduct interviews with ICAP executives and staff as well as with health care workers, health officials, beneficiaries of care, field teams, and others with insight into ICAP's work and contributions to generate story leads and ideas for development (5%)
Draft and distribute news stories that showcase project activities and impact to partners and stakeholders and that leverage projects as thought-leadership propositions for ICAP
Generate key ICAP announcements - including news stories and press releases about awards and honors (5%)
Continuously research promising placement for stories in popular and specialized media outlets and strategically pitch stories (5%)
Cultivate relationships with reporters, editors, and bloggers to generate coverage of ICAP's work in news stories, opinion pieces, long-form articles, etc. (5%)
Maintain an editorial calendar to plan appropriate and timely release of stories (5%)
Coordinate distribution of stories with manager of ICAP's digital outlets (5%)
Develop new outlets for ICAP storytelling, potentially including a blog, a Huffington Post column, a podcast, among other possibilities (5%)
Create and distribute infographics, short videos, and other material online and through social media to raise awareness of specific projects, as well as their funders and partners (5%)
Develop, guide, and provide oversight for project branding strategy, including appropriate ICAP, partner, and donor acknowledgment (5%)
Develop, write, and distribute project materials, including briefs, success stories, news stories, and social media content about key ICAP projects (5%)
Develop compelling content for key ICAP project websites and support the maintenance of content on these sites, as needed (5%)
Assist project teams to promote key ICAP events, including webinars, workshops, and conferences (5%)
Advance ICAP's thought leadership, including representation at international conferences and establishment of a publication plan for journal/scholarly articles (5%)
Participate in key project team meetings and support other communications needs as they arise (5%)
Perform other related duties as directed (5%)
Requires a Bachelor's degree in strategic communications, marketing, public policy, or a public health-related field or equivalent in education and experience plus a minimum of three years related experience.
Excellent writing, editorial and project management skills.
Strong abilities with standard office and communications software, including Microsoft Office

Fluency in English
Advanced degree preferred in journalism, public policy, development or related fields
Five of experience in Communications, preferably in an international development or public health organization.
Demonstrated experience in project management for communications.
Demonstrated ability to synthesize complex technical/scientific language for the web and other audiences/platforms.
Strong presentation skills and ability to do basic graphic layout.
Strong interpersonal and coordinative skills
International work experience
Experience working with an nonprofit or NGO
Professional experience in the health or intentional development sectors
Knowledge of Adobe Creative Cloud applications
Photography and video production experience or skills
French, Portuguese, Russian and/or other language skills
