Irvine non-profit Human Options is seeking an experienced Chief Development Officer (CDO) to partner with the Chief Executive Officer and Board of Directors to ensure of the organization. Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Chief Development Officer (CDO) fosters a culture of philanthropy and ensure that fund development is executed in keeping with the organization’s values, vision, and mission. The Chief Development Officer (CDO) is responsible for the strategic direction, development, organization, promotion, implementation, expansion and assessment of all philanthropic avenues to increase financial support and organizational awareness. The CDO manages all aspects of the agency’s fundraising plans, including major gifts, annual giving, corporate and foundation relations, grants, sponsorships, planned giving, and special events. This position also ensures the effective design, development and implementation of the marketing, communications and public relations plans to build greater awareness of Human Options. The CDO works in close collaboration with other executive team members, key volunteer leaders, and members of the development and program teams to achieve the fundraising goals of the organization.
Resource Development Strategic Planning
Develops annual and long-term strategies to secure gifts from individuals, corporations, foundations and government to increase financial support for mission impact throughout Orange County.
Structures and leads the development department to carry out a comprehensive financial development program to achieve the annual philanthropic goals of the organization.
Develops performance measurements, monitors results and works with the CEO to evaluate the effectiveness of the Human Options fund development program.
Keeps informed of developments in philanthropy and fund development as well as the general fields of management in the nonprofit sector; inform the CEO, Advancement Committee and board on current trends, issues, problems and activities in order to facilitate policy making.
Serves as member of Human Options executive leadership team
Oversee the Agency’s Planned Giving and Endowment program.
Board of Directors Relationship
Works with the CEO and Governance Committee to ensure fulfillment of board fund development goals; engages board members in the process and promotes optimum participation
Supports the Advancement Committee, developing agendas for meetings to allow the committee to fulfill their responsibilities effectively; develops an annual fund raising calendar to cover all crucial development issues in a timely fashion.
Provides and presents statistical analysis to Board and senior leaders.
Proactively develops and drives the strategic process for identification, cultivation, and solicitation securing major gift contributions from individuals.
Develops relationships and solicits key donors, working with the CEO and board members accountable for a portfolio of key prospect
Develops and implements comprehensive prospect research methodology to ensure adequate major gifts and other donor prospects to achieve fundraising goals.
Develops revenue goals for Human Options annual budget; participates in the overall development, implementation and monitoring of the Human Options annual budget, controlling expenditures within budget.
Develops diverse funding sources tailored to the needs of the organization that will help attract, retain, and motivate donors.
Plans, develops and implements Human Options annual campaigns, providing direction and assistance to development staff, board members and other key volunteers.
Working with the board-led Committees and Development staff, develops case statement and compelling collateral in conjunction with the annual campaign.
Oversees and provides direction for Human Options annual Gala and Annual Luncheon.
Working closely with the Development Manager develops budget in accordance with annual revenue target and secure major corporate sponsorship partners.
Working closely with the Development Manager, develops and executes additional special events as necessary to meet fundraising goals.
Corporate and Foundation Relationships
Serves as a public representative of the organization cultivating relationships with key corporate and foundation representatives to build awareness of and commitment to the Human Options mission.
Grant and Contract Management
Oversees the grant management of the organization. Monitors and ensures grant goals are achieved in accordance with the fundraising plan.
Marketing and Communications
In partnership with the CEO, Advancement Committee and staff, leads the strategic development and implementation of an integrated marketing and communication plan that ensures consistency of messages to achieve major impact for resource development and Human Options.
Ensures that all donors are appropriately acknowledged and receive communication throughout the year to assure that donor stewardship is integrated into the culture of the organization. Monitors and revises the donor stewardship calendar on a regular basis.
In partnership with the Development staff, monitors and ensures the accuracy and expansion of the donor database. Provides
Participate in related community activities to increase the organization’s presence in the community.
Oversee the awards/recognition program for the Agency to appropriately nominate volunteers, donors, and/or corporate sponsors.
Establish long-term, highly visible partnerships with companies and other organizations that add value to Human Options.
Oversee the development of skills of volunteers and staff to make contact with individuals and corporate executives to obtain support for Human Options.
Develop and maintain favorable working relations with the media, civic groups, volunteers, etc.
Oversee the Agency’s volunteer engagement program.
Bachelor’s degree in business or related field required.
Five years’ experience in fund development required
Two years Non-profit background experience preferred.
Three years marketing and communication required
One year donor and special events required.
Demonstrated ability to set clear priorities, delegate, and guide investment in people and systems.
Strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail.
Demonstrated success in securing major gifts and grants.
Demonstrated success in working with nonprofit boards and/or community volunteers.
Excellent coalition building skills with an ability to communicate and work effectively with a variety of internal and external stakeholders; a persuasive negotiator able to influence and engage a wide range of donors and build long-term relationships.
Demonstrated ability to develop strategic and operational plans and successful implementation through effective change management techniques.
Outstanding research, writing and oral communication skills and the experience and proclivity to be an outgoing spokesperson, relationship builder, and fundraiser.
Excellent in organizational management with the ability to coach and motivate professional staff and team of volunteers.
A professional and resourceful style; the ability to work independently and as a team player, to take initiative, and to manage multiple tasks and projects at a time.
Computer skills including MS Office Suite, grant management software and donor database experience.
