About The Children's Place Association
Building a secure and hopeful today so children facing health issues and poverty succeed tomorrow. That’s the promise of The Children’s Place Association.
We help children overcome illness and extreme poverty so they can lead healthy, productive lives. Opened in 1991 in response to the HIV/AIDS crisis, our Chicago-based organization now serves children and families challenged by a wide range of conditions. Our programs include Early Childhood Education, 24-hour Nursing Care, Family Housing, Supportive Services, Foster/Adoptive Care and Summer Camp. We serve more than 350 Chicago-area children and caregivers annually and our international program helps 300 HIV/AIDS-affected children in Haiti.
The Children’s Place Association is an innovator of services for special needs children. We pioneered the Midwest’s first residential nursing care facility for HIV/AIDS-affected children in 1991 and Chicago’s only Early Learning Center for HIV/AIDS-affected children in 1998. During the ensuing years, the organization has continued evolving its programs to meet the changing needs of clients.
Today, The Children’s Place helps families manage the complexities of long-term, chronic heal...th issues that are compounded by poverty. We help families access supportive services they need today – including child care, housing and mental health – while they work toward setting and achieving longer-term goals, including stabilized health, education, job training and life skills needed to earn a sustainable income and provide for their children’s futures.
The Children’s Place has widened its client criteria to help children and families struggling with other health conditions. Thanks to testing and treatment of pregnant women, there are few Chicago children born with HIV today. So the original 10-bed Residential Center now serves children with other medical issues or disabilities, including cerebral palsy, seizure disorder, cancer, diabetes and heart ailments. Also, our Early Learning Center now enrolls children from families impacted by a variety of health conditions.
But our strong commitment to families living with HIV/AIDS continues. The Children’s Place Association remains the Chicago region’s largest provider of children’s services for HIV/AIDS-affected families.
We also reach out to help families struggling with health issues and poverty out-side the U.S. Children’s Place International, launched in 2007, helps more than 300 children affected by HIV/AIDS in Haiti, providing basic needs – food, medications and shelter – plus educational support for school. Children’s Place International also provides consultation and training, most recently in Botswana (Southern Africa), helping local groups enhance capacity to address the critical needs of children and families.
Through partnership with our generous supporters, The Children’s Place Association is transforming the lives of vulnerable children and families in Chicago and overseas.
