Departmental Overview The Colleges of Chemistry (CoC) and Engineering (CoE) at UC Berkeley are recognized for their educational and research excellence, consistently ranking among the top one to three Science and Engineering programs in the United States. The combined Colleges have close to 300 regular faculty members, 2000 graduate students and 3500 undergraduate students located in nine academic departments.
The CoC and CoE lie at the intersection of a number of distinct science and engineering disciplines, multiple major multi-campus institutes, and several campus-wide strategic initiatives. In all cases, the two Colleges prepare scientists and engineers with the multidisciplinary skills to lead enterprises of all scales, in industry, government and the nonprofit sector. The professional Master of Molecular Science and Software Engineering (MSSE) graduate program within the College of Chemistry and in collaboration with the College of Engineering, prepares post-baccalaureate students for career paths that lead to software positions and managerial and executive positions in software technology enabled companies and organizations as well as entrepreneurial ventures. The program combines leadership coursework in innovation, teamwork and management with intensive study in an area of technical specialization of software engineering tied to large scale scientific computing, data science, and advanced algorithms.
Responsibilities MSSE Program Student Advisor - This position is responsible for assessing overall student needs, planning and implementing appropriate responses. Within an academic department/school/college provides, and makes recommendations for the improvement of the following categories:
Applying professional Student Services concepts, provides the full range of student services to student population served by the organization. Advises faculty on departmental/school/college and university policies and procedures; reviews students' progress and advises students and faculty on requirements for degree/program completion; identifies students with progression problems and recommends interventions; devises curriculum planning in collaboration with Chair/Dean and Faculty, and with other departments.
Advises students on (evolving) degree procedures, curriculum changes, and financial aid programs. Assists in course planning. Based on knowledge of computational science and software engineering areas and our collaborative partners, coordinates the assignment of students to faculty advisers. Prepares training materials for faculty advisers and annually edits MSSE student handbook.
Recommends resolution of extremely sensitive, specialized, and/or complex financial aid issues. Advises organization's management on available funds for entering students. Oversees the distribution of student aid. Identifies and advises faculty and students on resources for student financial support, including financial aid, student employment options, independent fellowships, etc. Manages internal and external fellowship competition for new and continuing students.
Serves as home base for MSSE students, welcoming them into the program and directing them to campus resources as appropriate. Handles exceptional requests and petitions. Identifies and refers students with specialized needs to the faculty Program Director and faculty advisor(s) as needed. Advises and counsels individuals with unique and/or confidential problems, and arranges specialized help for students as needed through other support services within the community. Makes recommendations for and effects resolution of complex student issues regarding financial commitments, personal crises, student progress and grievances.
Recruitment and Admissions:
The College of Chemistry in collaboration with the Computational Data Science and Engineering graduate group administers the admissions process for the MSSE graduate program. Incumbent advises on programmatic and administrative policies and procedures, oversees the processing of applications to the MSSE program using the Campus Student Information System, provides preliminary screening of all applicants, and supports the Admissions Committee.
The incumbent recommends outstanding candidates to the admissions committee for consideration for Berkeley fellowships, scholarships and awards.
Adheres to and organizes applications based upon admission criteria established by the degree and Campus.
Advises the Executive Director on outreach strategies and helps identify targeted institutions to meet program's goals. Coordinates, reviews and advises Executive Director and faculty on transferability and applicability of non-UC Berkeley courses.
Monitors trends in admissions and distribution of students.
Coordinates recruitment activities while working with both colleges to maximize enrollment yield of outstanding admits, including special efforts to attract qualified women and underrepresented minorities.
Evaluates the success of current outreach efforts; develops and implements enhancements.
In consultation with the Program Director, matches assignment of GSI resources to courses as appropriate based on course workload. Oversees the recruitment and appointments of GSIs, equitably assigns GSIs to course sections, and coordinates GSI assignments each term. The incumbent reviews GSI applications and makes recommendations to instructors in charge. Manages the nomination and selection procedures for campus Outstanding GSI Award completion.
Compiles and maintains annual data of applicants, admission and acceptance numbers, and rates of attrition. Assists with any reporting that is required.
Develops and maintains directory of capstone partners and program alumni.
Coordinates the match process for student capstone projects and provides support to students until end of the project.
Coordinates student events and activities.
Responsible for interpreting campus policies and advising students and faculty on student conduct, student grievances, disputes, and issues regarding discrimination.
Advanced knowledge of advising and counseling techniques.

Minimum 3-4 years student services related experience
Bachelor's degree in a related field and/or equivalent experience/training
Salary & Benefits Annual salary range: $55,100-$70,000, commensurate with experience.
