The Associate Director of Residential Life is a full time, 12-month leadership position and reports to the Director of Residential Life. The Associate Director of Residential Life is primarily responsible for the effective supervision and development of live-in professional and student staff as Colgate continues to advance the faculty-led Residential Commons living-learning model. This position serves as a core leader within the Office of Residential Life, providing oversight and support for a variety of educational and departmental processes and initiatives that advance the goals and mission of the Division of the Dean of the College and Colgate University. The Associate Director will interact early and often with students and parents as they interface with the department to advise, develop, support, and refer appropriately. This position will provide leadership for educational initiatives sponsored by the department including those facilitated through student and professional staff in the residence halls.
Areas of focus include responsibility for: ●supervision of five live-in professional staff (assistant/area directors) and indirect supervision of approximately 70 Community leaders; ●leadership of Community Leader recruitment, selection, and supervision, and coordinates professional and student staff training; ●oversight for residential life student and professional staff on-call rotations; ●effective and accurate communication with a broad range of constituents about residential life; ●effective management of conflict mediation and resolution with student and parent concerns; ●partnering with Office of Administrative Advising, Counseling & Psychological Services, Campus Safety and others in support of students in crisis work and wellness intervention; ●providing support for a wide range of housing-related services outside of the Fall and Spring semesters (i.e. summer housing, reunion, late stay/early arrival); ●collaborating with Dean of Student Conduct office, Shaw Wellness Center, and Campus Safety in support of effective adjudication of administrative student conduct hearings by Residential Life live-in staff; ●adjudicating appeals in the student conduct hearing process for first level student conduct cases in conjunction with the Dean of Student Conduct; ●further developing and executing departmental assessment plan and overseeing assessment of residential education initiatives; ●effectively providing oversight for interest house programming board in coordination of programming and allocation of funds through co-advisors; ●contributing to website content on residential life departmental site; ●effectively supporting the department office and processes (i.e., opening and closing of student residential facilities); ●assessing and making appropriate judgments in cases of emergencies; ●responding to and managing student crisis situations; ●serving, with Director, as essential staff in the event of a campus emergency in the University's Emergency Operations Center; ●as required, serving in residential life professional staff on-call rotation and providing second-level support for live-in staff serving on call; and ●other projects and duties as assigned.
As part of this role, the incumbent is also responsible for the following: ●acting on behalf of the director in the director's absence; ●effective financial management of assigned budgets; ●effective development of and contribution to University policy related to assigned areas; and ●as required, may be responsible for providing effective advice, counsel, and leadership on University committees.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills, including experience mediating conflict in and related to residential learning environments.
- Experience supervising graduate or professional level staff is required.
- A minimum of three to five years of related experience is required.
- Experience developing and/or working within a residential curriculum model is a plus.
A minimum of a Master’s degree in Higher Education and Student Affairs Administration or related field required.

Colgate was first founded in 1817 as The Baptist Education Society of the State of New York by 13 men with $13 and 13 prayers. The number 13 is still Colgate's lucky number; Friday the 13th is always designated Colgate Day. New York State granted the school a formal charter in 1819, and the Baptists in New York City — soap maker William Colgate among them — consolidated their seminary with the Hamilton school to form the Hamilton Literary and Theological Institution in 1823. A state charter issued in 1846 changed the name to Madison University and established the right to grant degrees. Madison was changed to Colgate in 1890, in honor of the Colgate family's enduring support.

Hamilton and the Surrounding Community
Founded in 1795, the Village of Hamilton, named one of the friendliest towns in the United States by Forbes magazine, has a population of roughly 4,000. The Hamilton Village Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1984, and is home to an eclectic mix of shops and restaurants. The area is ideal for outdoor recreation including biking, hiking, trail running, and skiing. Colgate's golf course, Seven Oaks, was designed by Robert Trent Jones and has been repeatedly recognized as one of the best college golf courses in the country. The University's location provides easy access for summer hikes and winter ski trips. It is less than a one-hour drive from Syracuse, four hours away from New York City, and five hours from Boston.
Colgate and Hamilton have formed the Partnership for Community Development, which develops an active network of professional consultants, foundations, municipalities, and not-for-profit organizations located throughout the Central New York region to assist area residents, businesses, and visitors.
