The Newport Symphony Orchestra at the Ocean (NSO) is a full season professional orchestra on the beautiful Oregon coast. Its mission is to enhance the quality of life in Oregon’s coastal communities with diverse, inspiring performances and engaging educational activities. The 60-member orchestra regularly hosts national and international soloists and guest artists. The orchestra’s home is the Alice Silverman Theater (328 seats) of the Newport Performing Arts Center with periodic performances in western and coastal Oregon communities. The Orchestra has an active youth outreach program with an introductory strings program, youth orchestra and summer music camp. Newport is a vibrant artistic, commercial, and tourism hub for the central Oregon coast and a community that cares deeply for the arts. The Executive Director is responsible for managing fundraising, marketing, promoting community relations plus human and financial resources of the Newport Symphony Orchestra. The Executive Director establishes administrative and strategic plans and implements policies set by the Board of Directors to achieve the NSO mission. The Executive Director serves as the chief operating officer and reports to the Board of Directors through the Board President.
Primary duties (approx. time commitment):
Development (30%): Develop, plan, manage, and implement all fundraising campaigns; cultivate new prospects and seek out new funding opportunities. Identify opportunities for grant support in collaboration with artistic staff, prepare applications, and ensure reporting compliance.
Marketing, Promotion and Communications (20%): Develop and implement a marketing plan for NSO performances and programs; oversee development and production of marketing materials; support the NSO's fund-raising events and campaigns; effectively communicate the mission and objectives of the NSO to a wide array of audiences.\
Finance (20%): Prepare annual operating budget; track revenue and expenditures and and provide regular financial projections to the BOD; maintain internal controls on budgeting, accounting, auditing, purchasing, and payroll.
Operations Administration (10%): Implement strategic and long-range administrative and personnel planning; negotiate contracts for artistic and administrative personnel and services; supervise program operations and administrative staff and oversee operation of program and administrative services.
Artistic Administration (10%): With the Music Director and Board, develop an annual plan for orchestra operations, including rehearsal and performance schedules; identify performance opportunities for NSO, its ensembles, and guest artists, and negotiate and execute necessary contracts.
Board of Directors Engagement (10%): Prepare and present finance, marketing, personnel reports to the BOD and Exec Comm; assist in the identification, recruitment, and orientation of new board members.
Bachelor’s degree and two years relevant experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Experience in customer service, fundraising, communications and marketing strongly preferred.
Experience with nonprofit organizations preferred.
Practical knowledge of social media.
Strong organizational, analytical and project management skills; experience managing multiple priorities; ability to create and analyze alternative solutions and make recommendations.
Excellent verbal and written communications skills.
Proven ability to inspire others to work towards a common goal.
Demonstrated ability to work independently with minimal supervision as well as collaboratively across teams and departments to achieve goals.
Must be able to handle sensitive, confidential information and to interact professionally and comfortably with donors, staff, and volunteers.
Ability to work with collaborative office tools, such as Google Drive, Microsoft Office & OneDrive, and Dropbox
Ability to lift objects up to 25 pounds;
Requires use personal vehicle for local and regional travel as necessary to complete the duties of the position (reimbursed as appropriate).
