Cornell University invites applications and nominations for the position of Jack and Rilla Neafsey Dean and Vice Provost of Cornell Tech.
The Dean and Vice Provost of Cornell Tech will join the campus at a time of tremendous momentum and possibility. The campus has an incredibly strong foundation on which to build, and a strong, creative, collaborative team in place as it heads into its next phase of development. The dean has the overall responsibility for the Roosevelt Island campus, including setting the strategy and direction, ensuring the academic quality of degree programs and research, and leading operations and campus expansion. The dean reports to the Cornell Provost, Dr. Michael Kotlikoff, and also works closely with University President, Dr. Martha Pollack. The dean also maintains strong working relationships with the academic deans and department chairs across Cornell University and with the Senior Executive Vice President and academic leader of Technion in Israel.
Cornell Tech is a tightly knit, relatively new, and expanding community. Working closely with both internal and external stakeholders, the dean sets the tone and nurtures the developing culture and climate on campus. External engagement is also a critical part of Cornell Tech's identity and founding mission. The dean will work closely with companies, nonprofits, government agencies, and early-stage investors and champion entrepreneurial initiatives and external engagement among all faculty, students, and staff. The dean oversees faculty hiring and recruits individuals who are eager to contribute on Roosevelt Island, collaborate with peers at Cornell, and strengthen the interdisciplinary nature of Cornell Tech's academic offerings.
Direct reports to the dean include Director of the Jacobs Institute, Associate Dean for Professional Programs, Associate Dean for Technical Programs, Associate Dean for Impact, Chief Practice Officer, Chief Administrative Officer, and Associate Vice President for Alumni Affairs and Development. As Cornell Tech scales its programs, it will be important for the dean to determine the optimal administrative organizational structure and culture to support its long-term needs.
Crucial to the initial success and future growth of Cornell Tech is its Board of Overseers. They are important advisors to the dean and meet as a group three times a year. Membership includes: David Siegel (Chairman), Michael Bloomberg, Ursula Burns, Robert S. Harrison, Daniel Huttenlocher (ex officio), Paul Jacobs, Peggy J. Koenig, Michael I. Kotlikoff (ex officio), Martha E. Pollack (ex officio), Steve Ross, Eric Schmidt, and Robert Smith. Lowell McAdam (former Chairman) and Irwin Jacobs also served as overseers during 2018.
