The New York University Tandon School of Engineering is seeking applications and nominations for the position of Managing Director, NYC Media Lab.
Founded in 2010, NYC Media Lab is a public-private partnership dedicated to driving innovation, entrepreneurship and job growth in media and technology by facilitating collaboration between the City's universities, its companies and entrepreneurs in New York City. Comprised of a consortium including New York City Economic Development Corporation, New York University and Columbia University as Founding Partners as well as The School of Visual Arts, The New School, CUNY, and Pratt Institute, NYC Media Lab's goals are to generate research and development, knowledge transfer, talent and startup formation related to media across all of the city's stakeholders.
The Lab is built on corporate membership, including A+E Networks, AMC Networks, Audible, Bloomberg LP, Charter Spectrum, Hakuhodo, Havas, Hearst Corporation, NBCUniversal, Publicis Groupe, Verizon, and Viacom. Associated Press, Tenfore Holdings and Universal Music Group are members. Member companies participate in events on technology issues; connect with one another and with faculty, students, and other university resources; and direct prototyping projects on areas of interest to them. NYC Media Lab directs various entrepreneurship programs to drive emerging media technology startup formation, such as The Combine, its accelerator program for university startups.
Reporting to the Executive Director, the Managing Director will serve as NYC Media Lab's lead executive and will be in charge of all programs, staff and operations of NYC Media Lab and will have responsibility for achieving revenue and program outcome targets. The Managing Director will be accountable for the day to day operation of the NYC Media Lab, and provide leadership on research direction, corporate innovation programs, education programs, entrepreneurship programs, and prototyping programs. This role will also have a strong external-facing function and will be accountable for realizing the full potential of business development opportunities for the Lab including industry partnerships, project-based services, and ongoing expansion of the Lab's business and funding model. The Managing Director will work closely with the Lab's staff to shape programs and services to meet stakeholder and market needs. Working in collaboration with the Lab's staff and senior management from the NYU Tandon School of Engineering, partner universities and the City, the Managing Director will draft and execute proposals and plans and pursue opportunities. The Managing Director will establish and maintain high-caliber, productive business relationships within overlapping sectors that will include media, technology and public interest stakeholders; and tech entrepreneurs. The Managing Director will drive new business leads, increases in the Lab's capacity, and advancement of the Lab's reputation as a community of practice around emerging media and technology innovation.
Required Education: Bachelor's degree or higher required; advanced degree preferred.
Required Experience: Minimum of 7+ years experience. Proven record of management experience, including day-to-day operations and supervisory responsibility in a nonprofit or a company; preferably some startup or corporate experience.Successful record of operating emerging organizations, including generating new business leads, fund-raising, and resource development.Experience in emerging media and technology industries.
Preferred Experience: Familiarity with applied research, technology commercialization, business models, entrepreneurship and early-stage venture formation.Established contacts from within and across the media, technology and nonprofit sectors are highly desirable
Required Skills, Knowledge and Abilities: Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including public speaking.Outcome-oriented with excellent time management skills.
