The Manager, Strategic Communications role serves as an integral member of the Membership, Marketing, and Communications (MMC) Department and reports to the Director, Membership, Marketing, and Communications. Position highlights include managing all strategic Academy communications including public relations, awareness activities marketed towards key audiences such as consumers, general dentists, and dental hygienists and executive communications such as speech writing and officer correspondence. Additionally, the Manager, Strategic Communications supports initiatives aimed at strengthening the Academy’s image and works closely with other staff to develop member communications pieces to promote Academy programs, benefits, and resources. This role also supervises the Membership, Marketing, and Communications Coordinator.
Responsibilities of the Manager, Strategic Communications:
Identifies and researches health topics that will resonate with target audiences and raise awareness of periodontics and the role of the periodontist
Oversees the Academy’s public relations program including press release distribution, media relations, and interview coordination
Serves as point-of-contact for and manages relationships with vendors
Coordinates spokesperson training for President and President Elect and other Academy leaders
Cultivates relationships with public relations and communications professionals at other dental and dental-related organizations
Produces patient education materials and other consumer-facing content, including brochures, web copy, and videos
Works with staff to develop resources to support awareness activities for general dentists and dental hygienists
Manages and acts as staff liaison to committees that support AAP’s public and professional awareness programs
Drafts speeches, presentations, and other remarks for Academy leaders ensuring alignment to Academy messaging while capturing individual voice
Prepares correspondence and other written material from Academy leaders including letters, electronic communications and bylined articles
Provides communications support to the Executive Director as needed
Supports Academy image initiatives (such as LEAD and Women in Periodontics) by providing strategic counsel and executing programming as needed
Proactively identifies and secures opportunities to elevate the Academy brand
Acts as Features Editor for Periospectives and determines quarterly issue theme and drafts and edits content as needed.
Contributes content to and edits electronic member communications vehicles as needed, such as the e-newsletter, targeted e-grams, perio.org and AAP Connect.
Required Skills and Abilities of the Manager, Strategic Communications:
Superior writing, proofreading, and editing skills
Demonstrated ability to manage numerous projects simultaneously and adhere to stringent production schedules
Superb organizational skills and sound decision-making ability
Proficiency in Microsoft Office
Strong understanding of social media platforms and best practices preferred
Strong capability to work effectively with others and assist others at critical points in the work flow
Education and Experience Requirements of the Manager, Strategic Communications:
Bachelor’s Degree (B.A. or B.S) from a four-year college or university in communications, journalism, marketing, or a related field
5+ years of writing and project management experience as well as successfully working with large groups of internal and external individuals
Marketing or communications experience preferred
Membership association experience preferred
Previous management or supervisory experience is a plus
