Background The William Monroe Trotter Collaborative for Social Justice is an innovative, new initiative of the Harvard Kennedy School (HKS) to promote excellence in the practice of social justice by supporting applied research and the use of evidence in advocacy and activism. The collaborative will facilitate the understanding and advancement of social justice by connecting faculty, students, scholars, practitioners, nonprofit organizations, and institutions of faith. Named for William Monroe Trotter, the first African American Phi Beta Kappa graduate of Harvard and founding influence of the NAACP, the William Monroe Trotter Collaborative will expand the civil rights and social justice legacy of William Monroe Trotter, leveraging the expertise of Harvard faculty, staff and students to build capacity in directly affected communities to address today's social justice challenges.
Duties & Responsibilities
The inaugural staff director will play a significant leadership role in working with the Faculty Director of the William Monroe Trotter Collaborative for Social Justice to launch and implement this landmark initiative.
Specific responsibilities include the following:
With direction from the Faculty Director of the William Monroe Trotter Collaborative for Social Justice, develop and implement a comprehensive initiative in applied research and policy development to learn from, support and ultimately enhance the efforts of social justice leaders and organizations.
Design and lead execution for strategy to create interdisciplinary approach where students and faculty work with communities, individuals and organizations to address core social justice challenges, leveraging the expertise of Harvard faculty, staff and students to develop community capacity on such issues as: artificial intelligence, algorithms and biased policing; voter suppression; environmental discrimination; pre-school to prison pipeline: municipal fines and modern debtors' prisons.
With the Faculty Director, identify range of interventions needed in communities to advance civil rights and social justice actions.
Develop strategies to use applied learning and research to enhance student learning and skill building around social justice efforts.
Partner with Faculty Director to develop and steward advisory board of influential high level stakeholders to build support for and engagement in the Trotter Collaborative at Harvard and in communities throughout the United States.
Create a national research and practice institute to understand and promote excellence in advocacy and activism and to use that knowledge to provide public policy, social ethics, communications, legal research, analysis, and support to carefully selected individuals, communities and / or organizations.
Engage national and international social justice networks in the work of the Trotter Collaborative and plan an initiative convening with select collaborators to shape the collaborative's strategy and launch.
In partnership with the Faculty Director and Alumni Relations and Resource Development staff, develop and implement fundraising plan to sustain the Trotter Collaborative.
With direction from the Faculty Director, build and Trotter Collaborative team, to include communications and field staff, and an administrative assistant.
Develop evaluation metrics to measure impact of the Trotter Collaborative in expanding capacity for social justice leadership and action at Harvard and in communities.
Provide stewardship and reporting as needed.
This is a fully benefits-eligible term appointment ending one year from date of hire, with possibility of renewal.

BA/BS and 7 or more years of professional experience OR and Master's Degree and 3 or more years of professional experience. Prior professional experience, knowledge and interest, in civil rights, social justice, and public policy as well as experience with program design and implementation is required. Previous supervisory experience.
Demonstrated knowledge of and strong ties with civil rights and social justice community strongly desired. Experience building programming, metrics, and engagement plans. Ability to work across teams and with multiple projects and constituencies. Successful candidates will possess strong interpersonal, organizational and communication skills, the ability to prioritize and handle a wide range of tasks simultaneously, good judgement, sense of initiative and problem-solving skills, and attention to detail. Ability to work independently with minimal supervision, as well as a team of faculty, administrators, and students. Candidates should be entrepreneurial, and energetic and comfortable in a start-up environment.
Requires the ability to work a flexible schedule with regular evening hours, occasional weekends and travel for civil rights / social justice capacity building in communities throughout the United States.
