Reporting to the CFO, the Controller owns all daily accounting responsibilities, monthly financial close, general ledgers, bank reconciliations, annual audits, and payroll, ensuring that all internal control procedures conform with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles. We are looking for an experienced non-profit accounting professional who is willing to roll up their sleeves. This is an opportunity to work with a small, collaborative team and to be a key contributor to one of Chicago's top cultural institutions.
Duties and Responsibilities
Maintains all internal controls for the organization, including organizational procedures for collection and reporting of revenue, and recommends improvements.
Provides direction and guidance to Staff Accountant to ensure clarity about goals and expectations.
Oversees accounts payable, cash receipts, and bank account reconciliations.
Reviews and approves journal entries.
Maintains fixed asset schedules and other sub-ledgers.
Ensures timely completion of the monthly and annual general ledger closings.
Manages the organization’s annual audit and tax filing process (990, 990T, IL990).
Prepares monthly financial statements, as well as departmental and project budget reports.
Assists the CFO with the annual budget and reforecast processes.
Reconciles contributions, pledges, and pledge payments with the Development team; tracks restricted gifts.
Ensures consistent tracking methods for grant reporting and provides the Development team with necessary financial budgets and reports for funders.
Works closely with Tour staff and Ticketmaster to ensure accurate collection and reporting of tour revenue.
Oversees accounts payable processes, including check runs, wire transfers, and credit card expense reporting, ensuring accuracy and completeness.
Processes semi-monthly payroll (including deductions, timecards, and accrual balances); ensures compliance with respect to employee benefits and workers compensation.
Researches and applies any new accounting standards released by the FASB.
Other projects as assigned
Degree in Accounting or Finance, CPA preferred
10 years in progressively responsible positions in accounting
Experience in a not-for-profit organization
Great Plains Dynamics experience preferred; Tessitura and Paycor experience helpful
Advanced knowledge of Excel
Flexibility and the ability to work collaboratively across all departments – strong communication skills are a must
Must be self-motivated and have excellent problem-solving skills
Experience managing staff preferred
