Position Summary: CEB (Continuing Education of the Bar) is nonprofit program of the University of California dedicated to the delivery of superior, California-specific legal resources and solutions to the state's lawyers. Founded in 1947 to help WWII veterans returning home resume the practice of law, CEB, now located in Oakland, supports the University of California's education and public service mission by providing the finest research, writing, and presentation by the best and brightest lawyers in the state.
Under general supervision independently perform legal research; analyze and summarize cases, statutes, and rules; input analysis into electronic manuscript files; write selected developments and case summaries, and perform legal editing on manuscript and forms as assigned.

Duty 1: Perform legal research and analysis, which includes monitoring legal developments, and identifying, analyzing and evaluating new statutory, rule, case law, or other developments relevant to CEB content.
Summarize and incorporate new developments into electronic manuscripts and Reporters as requested.
Locate, identify and update all legal authorities cited in CEB content; analyze cited authorities and correct legal inaccuracies in the manuscript or errors in citation style; verify that all statements of law in manuscript have supporting authority.
Edit forms to reflect developments when appropriate.
Edit legal manuscript, as assigned.
Review new cases, categorize, devise treatments for use in Primary Law product.
Do research and analysis needed to prepare CaseAlerts for AccessLaw as requested.
Keep up to date on the latest electronic legal research tools and techniques and know how to use them (e.g., Westlaw Next, etc.).
Recommend production process improvements when appropriate.
Act as mentor and/or train staff on legal research procedures. Function:Legal Research and Analysis, Writing and Editing Percent: 90
Duty 2: Keep abreast of current industry trends and activities within assigned substantive area(s) through activities such as social media networking, customer contact/outreach, and joining specialty legal associations.
Participate in social media groups such as LinkedIn in accordance with CEB policies or as assigned.

Duty 3: Participate in various inter- and intra- departmental initiatives and projects.

Job Requirements J.D. or Paralegal
Demonstrated ability to edit, revise, and update material accurately and thoroughly in assigned substantive areas.
Excellent legal research skills including the use of electronic online research tools, such as Westlaw and Lexis, and citation verification programs.
Excellent writing skills; strong editing skills with a keen eye for detail and accuracy and ability to clearly and effectively communicate legal developments in writing and verbally.
Ability to adapt writing style to meet CEB guidelines for all delivery formats.
Excellent analytical skills; demonstrated command of the English language.
Highly effective communication and collaboration skills and demonstrated ability to work effectively as part of a team both within existing department, in other departments and outside of CEB.
Ability to be flexible and proactive.
Demonstrated attention to detail, ability to effectively manage time, work in an organized and detailed manner to meet tight deadlines, keep accurate records, and produce desired results.
Excellent problem solving skills and ability to be flexible and proactive.
Ability to navigate and participate effectively in social media websites.
Proficient in standard personal computer applications such as MS Office applications (Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel), Westlaw, Lexis, and cite checking programs. Required
