CARDINAL’S ANNUAL STEWARDSHIP APPEAL
The Cardinal’s Annual Stewardship Appeal (CASA) is the primary vehicle through which many of the Church’s charitable, educational, and pastoral activities are funded in the Archdiocese. Among its priorities this year are:
Assistance for Needy Parishes – Ensures that parishes can keep providing a faith home to tens of thousands of Catholics. CASA provides operational support and emergency assistance to those parishes in need of financial aid.
Pastoral and Administrative Support – CASA provides funds to train and provide nearly 1,000 staff who help with church management.
Funding for Parish Schools – Funding is provided for 128 elementary schools in the Archdiocese that are part of or located at parishes.
Formation of New Parish Priests – Contributions allow young men to attend Saint Joseph’s Seminary.
A Home for Retired Parish Priests – CASA funding provides for retired pastors at the Saint John Vianney Clergy Residence, including intensive treatment for those requiring an enhanced care unit.
Reporting to the Executive Director of Development, the Director of the Cardinal’s Annual Stewardship Appeal will design, develop and implement an aggressive annual fundraising program to grow the Appeal to $25 million over the next couple of years and set CASA on a trajectory for further growth in the future. This is one of the priorities of His Eminence Timothy Michael Cardinal Dolan.
The Director of CASA will determine and implement a strategy for several fundraising methodologies: direct mail (concentrating on donor acquisition), face-to-face solicitations of high-end ($1,000-$49,999) annual gifts, cultivation events, and parish offertories. The Director will supervise the engagement and solicitation plans for key prospects and work effectively with parish priests to ensure that fundraising in the parishes is accomplished successfully.
This position will be a member of the senior development team which, in addition to the Executive Director of Development, includes the Chief of Staff, the Director of Major Campaigns and Operations, and the Director of Donor Relations. This position will manage a talented team of 15+ staff.
The Director of CASA will be innovative, creative, and visionary, as well as a highly-accomplished annual campaign/major gift fundraiser with a strong track record in data analytics, consistently meeting deadlines, and managing a staff of professional fundraisers. S/he will need to have the ability to work in a fast-paced, complex organizational structure. The successful candidate will need to have a heart for God’s call in their life and a genuine passion for the mission of the Catholic Church.
Develop and put into action a strategic fundraising plan to raise $20+ million through the Appeal in nearly 300 parishes throughout the Archdiocese, including, themes for appeals and content of all collateral materials, as well as solicitation strategies for the Appeal’s top donors in coordination with the Director of Donor Relations.
Create and oversee a pastor engagement plan at the parish-level to offer support, partner with and garner feedback from parish priests.
Oversee staff portfolios of key prospects, and ensure that cultivation, solicitation and stewardship visits with the annual fund’s top prospects are made each month.
Supervise and mentor a team of 15+, conduct semi-annual performance evaluations, and set specific goals for each member of the team.
In conjunction with the Director of Major Campaigns and Operations, shape, align, and calendarize the message in fundraising communications and direct mail pieces.
Oversee regular tracking and analysis of all fundraising progress and report the results regularly.
Manage the CASA Leadership Committee and the Pastors Advisory Council.
Oversee stewardship and recognition of annual fund donors.
Develop and manage the annual CASA budget of approximately $2-$3 million.
Ensure that the Appeal’s communications and branding are attractively and adequately conveyed through print, web content, and social media.
Oversee the strategy and implementation of 6-9 donor cultivation events a year including one-on-one breakfasts, regional campaign kick-off events, and major donor receptions.

A bachelor’s degree with a minimum of five to ten years of successful fundraising experience for a religious or nonprofit organization; master’s degree preferred.
Experience running annual appeal campaigns with multiple donor channels, particularly direct mail, is preferred.
A track record of identifying, qualifying, cultivating and soliciting significant major gifts from individual prospects
Be a confident and articulate public speaker
Experience partnering with lay leaders at the highest levels
Experience running and staffing high-level meetings, and providing support and direction executing such meetings that are professional and engaging Experience working with clergy preferred, but not required.
Demonstrated ability to passionately present the mission of the Catholic Church in a convincing and professional manner that engages, inspires and generates enthusiasm among prospects
Flexibility and willingness to travel and work on evenings and weekends as needed.
Knowledge and proficiency of Raiser’s Edge or other donor management database software are required, as well as the ability to utilize Excel.
