The Accounting Manager works under the direction of the Controller and is responsible for supervising and managing the accounting department. This team is responsible for the accuracy of postings and corrections to general ledger accounts, reconciliation of revenue accounts, general journal entries, verification of deposits and postings to accounts receivable, prepare reports of accounting transactions and supervising the accounting department.
A successful candidate will be a detail-oriented team player with prior nonprofit accounting, Paycom, and Financial Edge experience. They also need to display the highest ethical and professional judgment, behavior and standards.
Supervise Payroll staff ensuring accurate employee payroll, CTPF processing, 403B & 457 distribution
Review grant vouchering process
Recommend improvements, adaptations, or revisions in the accounting system and procedures for new or changed controls and evaluate alternative means of treating transactions
Advise operating officials on accounting matters
Assist with preparation of month-end and year-end reports, and monthly financial statements as required by management, audit firms or governmental agencies

ASPIRA was founded in New York City in 1961 Dr. Antonia Pantoja to combat the high dropout rate among Puerto Rican high school youth. The organization expanded in 1968 and is now known as ASPIRA associations and currently operates in 8 states including Puerto Rico. The Association is a confederation of ASPIRA statewide organizations, which provide various educational, enrichment and support services to Latino youth and their families in schools, community centers, and ASPIRA Clubs. ASPIRA is also a very diverse organization working with substantial numbers of Puerto Ricans, Dominicans, Central Americans, Mexicans, and Cubans, as well as with African Americans, non-Hispanic whites and Haitians, among others. ASPIRA is dedicated exclusively to developing the educational and leadership capacity of Hispanic youth.
Duties & Responsibilities
Facilitate and oversee grant audits
Compile/verify and analyze financial information to prepare entries for accounts, such as the general ledger and documenting business transactions
Balance accounts and complete books through monthly trial balance within prescribed agency procedures and generally accepted accounting principles
Identify and record all cash receipts and payroll-related transactions
Identify and record bank transactions such as electronic fund transfers and bank charges and other related expenses
Perform monthly bank reconciliations
Plans the manner in which account structures should be developed or modified
Analyze the effects of transactions upon account relationships
Review the accounting system for adequacy as the basis for reporting to management
Confer with staff to resolve procedural problems in tracing sources of error
Maintain positive, cooperative, and mutually supportive relationships
Perform other duties as assigned
A minimum of a bachelor’s degree in Accounting required, master’s degree preferred
A minimum of four years of accounting experience preferably working with non-profit organizations and government funding, Chicago Public Schools
Excellent interpersonal, leadership, public speaking and organizational skills, verbal and written
Knowledge of basic accounting principles and practices
Experience in Paycom
Experience with Blackbaud Financial Edge
Knowledge of Microsoft Office - Must be proficient in Excel
Knowledge of payment processing and receipt processing procedures
Skill in mathematical computations used in accounting
Skill in using computer and application software for financial transactions
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work
