The Chemical Educational Foundation (CEF) is a national nonprofit with a $2M annual budget dedicated to building the excitement and value of chemistry and STEM careers with K-8 students through accessible science programs and hands-on experiences. CEF is seeking a full-time Development Director to lead its ambitious fundraising efforts. This position will work with the Board of Trustees, Executive Director and other CEF staff to build a robust and sustainable resource base to support current and future operations as well as nationally significant programs tied to STEM education. The Development Director will report to the Executive Director and will be responsible for designing and leading CEF’s primary fundraising activities, including its vibrant corporate partners program, individual giving, foundation support and special events. This position is based in Arlington, VA.
Major Responsibilities Include:
Solidify, expand and diversify CEF’s strong donor base and network of supporters to secure and increase funding from corporate, foundation, individual and planned giving donors.
Develop and implement strategic fundraising plans to secure annual commitments and multi-year strategic relationships across all funding channels to meet CEF’s revenue needs.
Develop and maintain ongoing relationships and donor-centric strategies for all corporate partners, individual donors, planned giving donors and foundations to deepen engagement with CEF.
Identify, cultivate and strategically engage prospective donors.
As part of the senior leadership of CEF, advise the Executive Director on organizational strategy and priority-setting as it pertains to fundraising.
Co-develop proposals and other fundraising collateral with program and communications staff.
Oversee and manage stewardship activities; meet all compliance requirements (grant, partnership, etc.) through timely, accurate and regular reporting (both narrative and financial). Manage all mailings and draft donor communications such as annual contribution requests, sponsorship request letters, acknowledgment letters, newsletters, cultivation emails, etc.
Manage and oversee donor database, donor mailing lists and online giving vehicles; make recommendations for and implement improvements in the tracking process and database management as needed.
Track and analyze monthly contribution reports to assure budget adherence and work with Executive Director and senior staff to develop and manage annual budget (revenues and expenses).
Support events and plan recognition strategies to cultivate new prospects or support the goals of existing funders.
Act as staff liaison to the CEF Board of Trustees’ Fund Development Committee and Nominating Committee, working to plan and communicate donor strategies and implement key changes to the fundraising plan with the full Board of Trustees.
Support the Board of Trustees/Board committees by presenting on development activities, preparing development collateral, staffing development meetings and other events.
Qualifications, Skills and Commitment:
Bachelor’s degree required.
A successful candidate should have 5-7 years of experience in development and/or nonprofit management with a proven fundraising track record.
Experience leading, developing and implementing fundraising strategies that build donor loyalty and attract prospective donors across all revenue channels.
Strong experience managing and developing budgets.
Excellent communication skills, including writing and speaking.
Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to relate effectively to senior professionals.
Must be able to juggle multiple projects, prioritize activities and meet deadlines.
Ability to travel 25% (required).
