The Impact Weighted Accounts Initiative is a newly formed effort at the Harvard Business School to advance the practice of considering social and environmental factors alongside financial performance in corporate management and investment decision-making by developing new, integrated valuation and financial reporting mechanisms.
The Project Director, Senior Researcher is a leadership position critical to the launch and success of the effort. The Project Director will work directly with Professor George Serafeim of the Harvard Business School to i) set a coherent strategy for the IWAI; ii) lead day-to-day execution of this strategy including managing a team of at least two researchers, providing exceptional project and stakeholder management, and ensuring high-quality output; iii) build and maintain the external presence of the IWAI with key stakeholders.
The successful candidate will demonstrate strong interpersonal skills and conceptual ability; high quality of mind; excellent writing skills; the ability to work productively under time pressure; the capacity to manage successfully; and the ability to interact successfully with senior leaders. The position will involve working with academic-quality research, diverse and senior external stakeholders, managing high-performing teams, and ensuring high quality deliverables.
The role will include the following key elements:
Strategy: Work alongside faculty to set mission and strategy for the IWAI; set and track progress against measurable goals; develop and lead implementation of viable and measurable project and research plans, which may include research, publications, and convenings.
Implementation: Lead day-to-day execution of research and deliverables. Specifically,
Lead design and implementation of project plans in support of IWAI goals, including:
Manage and coordinate research efforts, including meeting consistently with research associates to support/review/advance their research; providing interim guidance and direction; and coordinating with Professor Serafeim
Structure assignments, manage near- and long-term priorities and keep Professor Serafeim (and the President of the Advisory Council) informed as necessary, using own judgment;
Take complex research ideas, concepts, and methodologies and apply them to this innovative concept of an impact weighted account
Manage and oversee research output and key deliverables to ensure accuracy and quality
Oversee and contribute to related research, case writing and/or publications, as appropriate
Track and report on progress against IWAI measurable goals, including to an Advisory Board comprised on senior stakeholders from academia, corporations, and investment firms
Build awareness and buy-in for Impact Weighted Accounts across HBS/Harvard and externally; and serve as a key day-to-day lead for the effort.
Build and Maintain External Presence: Identify knowledge gaps and trends where HBS could have a positive impact on ecosystem development. Specifically, this person will:
Develop a network of practioners, researchers, consultants, evaluators, investors, academic institutions, etc. working within the IWAI ecosystem; where appropriate, identify opportunities for partnerships or collaborations to advance the IWAI goals and leadership
Represent IWAI externally to generate additional insights and build awareness of the IWAI efforts, including speaking at conferences, participating in working groups or tasks forces, or other like activities as relevant
Collaborate with multiple entities across nonprofit, academic, philanthropic, governmental and business networks to increase impact of this work in support of this work;
Potential Outcome: This position will offer first hand exposure to leading scholars and practioners in the field of sustainable, ESG and impact investing. The opportunity to participate in the development, testing and dissemination of a new social accounting method; and involvement with senior leaders in business and government. The position is ideal preparation for an individual interested in working in an ESG or impact role at financial or investment institutions.
About the Impact Weighted Accounts Initiative: The Impact Weighted Accounts Initiative (IWAI) aims to accelerate the practice of considering social and environmental factors alongside financial performance in corporate management and investment decision-making. Specifically, our vision is to generate the intellectual capital to inform financial statements that reflect the net social and environmental impacts of company's activity on stakeholders. We aspire to create a methodology that is adopted and used by 25% of global market capitalization by 2025. This research effort will be led by George Serafeim and incubated at HBS for a planned two years. An Advisory Council to the project will be chaired by Sir Ronald Cohen, Chair of the Global Steering Group on Impact Investment. The IWAI will develop its findings in close partnership with the GSG and the Impact Management Project.
This is a full-time term appointment starting as soon as possible through June 30, 2019 with the expectation of reappointment for 2 years.

Bachelor's degree with 7+ years relevant work experience is required. Evidence of academic excellence and management experience. Strong skills related to the Microsoft Office Suite are expected.
MBA or similar advanced degree is a plus. Knowledge and training in social, responsible, impact, and/or ESG investing; accounting; and/or development, health, or environmental economics is a plus.
This position requires an individual capable of consistent use of discretion, judgment, and initiative. Ability to read academic, subject-specific information and write a reasoned and thoughtful analysis, as well as produce a creative interpretation, is a must. Diplomatic skills, comfort in interacting with prominent individuals, and grace under pressure are essential. Evidence of prior high-quality writing; background in analysis; and/or interpretation of relevant data, research, news, and literature is a plus.
