OVERVIEW OF RESPONSIBILITIES The Controller is responsible for AACOM’s budgeting and monthly closing processes, preparing reports for the Board of Deans, including the Finance, Audit, and Executive Committees, managing relationships with AACOM’s outside CPA firm, and managing two internal accounting staff members responsible for monthly close, accounts payable and expense reimbursement, member invoicing and collections, and account reconciliations . The Controller will also manage relationships with AACOM departments by supporting their accounting, budgeting, and analytical information needs and their adaptation of accounting suite tools (Intacct, Bill.com, and Nexonia). The Controller will develop, maintain, and enforce internal controls to maximize the protection of the association assets and, in conjunction with the VP, Finance & Operations, establish financial and operating benchmarks and reporting standards on a monthly, quarterly, and annual basis. ACCOUNTABILITIES: - Manages the complete accounting process, including journal entries, month-end close, general ledger, bank and balance sheet account reconciliations, and payroll processing activities of outside vendor.
- Implements nonprofit financial reporting and compliance including ASU 2016-14
and Form 990. - Oversees lobbying calculations for quarterly and semi-annual reporting to Office of the Clerk, U.S. House of Representatives and Form 990.
- Ensures that the budgeting process aligns to AACOM’s strategic plan approved by the Board of Deans and that it is completed with appropriate input and reviews by department heads, senior leadership, and the Finance and Executive Committees of the Board of Deans.
- Implements the investment policy approved by the Finance Committee of the Board of Deans through outside investment advisors and properly accounting for performance and overseeing reporting to the Finance Committee.
- Reviews financial business processes to improve quality, efficiencies, and compliance.
- Oversees, manages, and implements the financial functions of the association, including, but not limited to accounting functions, financial reporting, investments review, cash management, budgeting, and the audit process.
- Ensures that the VP of Finance & Operations is well informed on issues of financial importance to the association and provides financial support and advice on overall activities to be implemented and their financial impact on the association.
- Provides professional and financial support to the AACOM staff and to the association's Finance Chair and Audit Chair and the Finance and Audit Committees.
- Ensures that the association's financial practices and accounting procedures are in compliance with current federal and state laws, and generally accepted accounting standards.

- Serves as staff liaison to the Council of Fiscal Officers. Prepares agendas for the Council's annual meeting, arranges meetings and materials, writes minutes, and follows up on assignments.
- Supervises other financial team members including the Accounting Specialist and outsourced resources as needed, who maintain and update the accounting records, process electronic bill pay, assist in the monthly reconciliation of accounts and monthly closing of the financial records, prepares a draft of the monthly financial statements for review, and maintains the detailed accounting records for any federal contracts.
EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE: - At least 5 years of public accounting experience at the audit supervisor/senior accountant/ manager level or controller level experience within industry or a nonprofit.
- Bachelors’ degree preferably in Accounting or Finance.
- Demonstrated experience with various accounting systems, preferably AACOM’s accounting suite (Intacct, Bill.com, and Nexonia)
- Certified Public Accountant
SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE & ABILITIES: - Proven ability in controller-level accounting duties.
- Track record of using technology to improve business intelligence and process efficiencies.
- Ability to meet monthly, quarterly and annual deadlines.
- Strong analytical skills.
- Hands-on software experience, preferably with Intacct, Bill.com, Nexonia, and Microsoft GP accounting software, and skilled with Excel and Word.
- Excellent oral and written communication skills.
- Proven interpersonal skills.
- Ability to work well within a team environment and interact effectively with staff, members of the association, and others.
- Ability to define problems, establish facts and draw valid conclusions and provide actionable recommendations.
