The Strategist will lead, oversee and manage the development and growth of profitable new business and to develop and maintain effective key business relationships. The Strategist is a key contributor to the discovery and creation of new business opportunities, and works closely with Executive Director to strategize on new partnerships and delivery of core services to existing and prospective corporate partners. In conjunction with Executive Director, set the strategic direction of new business development initiatives for the association. Lead planning and execution of strategies to increase sales and association growth with a particular emphasis on new meeting products such as virtual meetings and distance learning products. Work with Executive Director and Director of Convention Services to research and identify new meeting prospects; initiate and cultivate relationships with prospects resulting in support for APHA. Collaborate with relevant departmental staff (Publications, membership and policy center, etc.) to identify and monitor industry trends, identify business opportunities, develop strategic alliances and competitive strategies that will advance the mission of the organization and result in new business and sales opportunities. Enhance existing online and meetings programs and identify new program opportunities. Generate new business opportunities within the scope of this position and grow sources of non-dues revenue. Lead the formation of new business partnerships and negotiation of contracts. Integrate market research and analysis in strategic planning, program development, delivery and evaluation and competitive positioning strategies. Ensure that initiatives for new business are comprehensive in scope and systematically evaluated for feasibility and results. Develop and monitor department budget. Perform other professional duties as may be required.

Bachelor's Degree in Public Health, Business Administration or Management preferred or equivalent experience. At least 5 years of experience in meeting management and/or product development experience, preferably in nonprofit associations. Certified meeting professional certificate required. Excellent negotiation skills, proven track record of successfully pitching for new business. Proven track record of increasing revenue through managing sales pipeline and lead generation. Strong communication and interpersonal skills with aptitude in building relationships with professionals of all organizational levels. Demonstrated understanding of customer relation’s management. Demonstrated ability to identify and pursue business development. Strong prospecting, presentation, and closing skills. Exceptional written communication skills. Proven contract negotiation and management skills. Proven experience in strategic positioning and developing and executing business plans. Display willingness to make decisions; exhibits sound and accurate judgment; makes timely decisions. Demonstrated skills and experience in strategic and analytical thinking. Demonstrated skills in facilitating strategic business and professional alliances, partnerships and other forms of collaboration. Position is based in downtown DC near several metro stations. Hours: 35 hours a week, full-time, Mon- Fri. (daytime). Number of openings: 1.
