Everytown for Gun Safety is an American nonprofit organization working to address the gun violence epidemic in the US. As the counterweight to the gun lobby, our work has a strong focus on pushing for stronger gun laws and innovative policy solutions at the federal, state, and local level.
The legal team works to advance Everytown's mission to reduce gun violence by improving gun-related laws and regulations in all 50 states and at the federal level, generating groundbreaking original research and contributing to Everytown's position as a thought leader in the gun violence prevention movement.
What's the Role:
As Counsel for Special Projects on Everytown’s Legal team. you will help develop Everytown’s expertise in new policy areas and support organization-wide efforts to address gun violence on the federal, state and local level. This is a full time role, starting on a one-year contract, located in the NYC office.
In this role you will:
- hold primary responsibility for developing Everytown’s knowledge and expertise in new policy areas
-function as a key member of the growing policy team, fielding timely legal and research questions that support the cross-departmental effort to pass and protect lifesaving gun violence prevention laws at the state and local level
- review and analyze newly introduced and amended legislation, regulations, legal opinions and other policy materials
- perform research on gun laws around the country, the 2nd Amendment and other firearm-related jurisprudence and policy
- contribute to research reports and drafting other public-facing materials
You will need to have:
J.D. and membership in a state bar
A minimum of 2 years of relevant professional experience
Excellent research, writing, and editing skills, and outstanding attention to detail
The ability to explain complicated legal concepts to a general audience
A strong work ethic, sense of humor, flexibility, creativity, and a professional demeanor
The ability to manage multiple projects in a fast-moving environment and deliver timely and high-quality work
A knack for forging strong relationships with colleagues in positions across the organization and work toward a common goal
Comfort working in a sometimes hectic open-plan office
A strong commitment to reducing and preventing gun violence
