University Development and Alumni Relations, increases support for and enhances knowledge of UC Berkeley through communications, public outreach, and fundraising. The department is responsible for centralized fundraising and donor engagement, and works to strengthen unit development offices by consulting and partnering with campus fundraisers. University Development and Alumni Relations also handles a range of central activities and services encompassing events, communications, stewardship, prospect development, gift management, database management, and more.
University Development and Alumni Relations encompasses the UC Berkeley Foundation (UCBF), a California nonprofit public benefit corporation established to secure support for the University. The UCBF is also Cal's primary vehicle for enlisting fundraising volunteers from the private sector. The UCBF is staffed by University Development and Alumni Relations leadership.
The University of California, Berkeley seeks a motivated development professional to help expand and realize the full potential of the University's East Coast fundraising program. Preference is for this person to be located on the East Coast.
This position will play an important and vital role in engendering a habit of high-level, annual and major giving among our alumni, parents, and friends on the East Coast, with a primary focus on New York City. The primary purpose of this position is to assist in the development and growth of prospect pipelines by qualifying new major gift prospects, engaging new constituents, upgrading current donors and identifying new volunteers.
This position will also be responsible for building upon the current model of alumni engagement and coordinating the events calendar for the region. The position involves collaboration with Prospect Development and External Relations staff, unit-based fundraisers, faculty, alumni, volunteers, and donors. This position requires an understanding of advanced fundraising principles, a comfort with and willingness to make the ask, a high level of organization, professionalism, the ability to travel and work independently, and a broad familiarity with the objectives of the current campaign.
Organized by geographic regions, Berkeley's Major Gifts program is critical to ensuring the University's enduring excellence. Situated within University Relations, Major Gifts fundraisers follow a donor-centric ethos and represent the breadth of Berkeley's programs and partnership opportunities.
Direct Fundraising: Maintains a dynamic prospect portfolio of high-level leadership fund prospects and emerging major gift prospects, with the capacity to give $50,000 or more. Identify, cultivate, solicit and steward leadership and major gift prospects and donors.
Makes 130-160 in person visits or substantive phone calls per year.
In collaboration with Prospect Development, identify and prioritize prospects for outreach and suggest refinements to queries when needed
Qualify prospects and solicit 25-50 leadership level gifts per year with the goal of securing $250,000 in philanthropic support annually.
Cycle 35-45 prospects in and out of the portfolio annually, qualifying them into or out of the pipeline and assessing their inclination.
In partnership with the Sr. Director and East Coast team members, develop thoughtful strategies and intentionally prioritize prospects and travel to ensure revenue goals are met by focusing on soliciting donors at appropriate levels and through maintaining an active regional/territory presence
Campus Partnerships and Events: Build high-trust relationships with unit development directors on campus. Actively seek to improve knowledge of Berkeley ecosystem and partner with unit fundraisers on donor strategy, cultivation, and solicitation.
Regional Expertise: Serve as a regional expert; possess a deep understanding of local philanthropic trends, prominent alumni, business trends and the broader higher education landscape on the East Coast.
Team Support: Provide analysis and make recommendations to management; participate in annual and strategic planning efforts; if needed coordinate and oversee the work of support staff
Alumni Relations: Plans, schedules, and implements fundraising and alumni engagement projects and programs, including specific fundraising programs designed to maximize faculty and leadership travel to the region to engage with prospective donors.
Creates and maintains high-level event calendar
Acts as liaison to alumni chapters in the territory in order to facilitate faculty speaking at events
Bachelor's degree in related area and/or equivalent experience/training
Thorough working knowledge and understanding of fundraising, donor relations and public relations concepts, principles, techniques, procedures and practices.
Experience with major gift cultivation, annual gift cultivation, and volunteer management,
Experience with off-site event coordination.
Thorough knowledge of relational databases and client relation management platforms.
Thorough knowledge of applicable laws, rules, regulations, policies, et cetera.
Exceptional written, oral and interpersonal communication skills, including political acumen, to build and maintain effective working relationship at all organizational levels and with outside constituencies.
Analytical and critical thinking skills, including skill in creative and effective decision-making and problem identification/avoidance/resolution.
Proven project management skills.
Ability to work with various deadlines and multiple priorities simultaneously.
Ability to maintain confidentiality.
Outstanding ability to self-motivate and take the initiative.
Skills to meet or exceed fundraising goals and objectives.
Background check required.
Ability to travel extensively for donor visits
