Current is seeking an enterprising reporter to cover fundraising strategies and trends in public media. As associate editor, you’ll interview decision-makers and creative professionals who are working on new models for sustaining and expanding their services. In addition to covering fundraising, you’ll report on other issues and trends within public media that fit your interests and our editorial agenda.
The Associate Editor creates timely, valuable coverage that helps our audience of media professionals excel at their institutions and advance public media’s mission.
We’re looking for a reporter with strong writing skills and a knack for finding stories that are unique and compelling to our readers. As a member of our editorial team, you’ll produce coverage for our website and print publication, reporting quickly on developing stories and going in-depth on enterprise assignments. You’ll identify opportunities for using engagement tools and strategies to shape our reporting and develop material for interactive data and multimedia presentations.
The Associate Editor reports, writes and develops material to make Current essential, useful, timely reading for people who work in public TV and radio. The Associate Editor has special responsibility for specific areas of coverage but also picks up stories on other beats to fill gaps in coverage or to contribute to in-depth reporting projects that involve the editorial team, including interns and freelance contributors.
The Associate Editor consults with the managing editor before making commitments for Current and is encouraged to recognize and develop new potential subjects for coverage that are consistent with Current’s and the managing and digital editors’ priorities.
Recognizing the high levels of professionalism among our readers, he/she aims to surpass or at least meet our standards for writing quality, journalistic fairness, accuracy, readability, analysis, insight and engagement. S/he helps maintain Current’s expected range and volume of coverage for digital and print publication. Meets firm deadlines, helping to maintain copy flow to editors and timely completion of stories.
Occasional evening or weekend work may be required to make deadlines or cover public media conferences
Occasional travel to cover conferences or for field reporting
This position is 100% contingent on business revenues and external grant funding

Required Education and Experience
3-5 years of relevant experience
At least 3 years of experience in journalism or other creative media
Strong command of journalistic writing and reporting techniques; and understanding of media — particularly noncommercial, nonprofit and digital media — and organizational dynamics
Preferred Education and Experience
Knowledge of public broadcasting, digital media, nonprofit operation, fundraising or other topics pertinent to public media
