Managing Editor of Pharmaceutical Engineering magazine
This is a full-time salaried position with benefits that may be based either in ISPE’s North Bethesda, Md. or Tampa, Fla. offices, or may be a remote position anywhere in the continental United States.
The International Society for Pharmaceutical Engineering (ISPE) is seeking a Managing Editor to manage editorial and production processes for Pharmaceutical Engineering, its bimonthly print and digital magazine.
Reporting to the Editorial Director, the Managing Editor works regularly with vendors and interacts with members of the society as well as internal departments including sales, marketing, conferences, and membership. This position is primarily an editing and production role, with the possibility for some writing.
Manage editorial and production from manuscript submission through publication in both print and digital formats, including:
Set schedules for all editorial/production activities;
Manuscript handling and tracking;
Peer review process oversight;
Author and reviewer outreach and follow up;
Follow up with authors with reviewer feedback and revisions;
Manuscript editing, revision, and proofreading;
Review page proofs and oversee freelance copyeditors;
Web site content posting and revisions;
Create print/mail orders.
Edit all content including association news, features, and technical articles to include proofreading, line edits, and substantive edits.
Prepare, upload, and update print content to designer, including coordinating graphics material, obtaining and uploading advertising material, managing ride-alongs or other inserts, managing PDF proofs review and revisions, and finalizing the issue for upload to the printer.
Liaise with the printer on upload and proof review, including obtaining revised PDFs from designer, creating and following up on print orders, etc.
Prepare, upload, and update digital content on magazine web site, including coordinating graphics materials with designer, placing content into CMS and reviewing for accuracy and style, updating content as needed, and preparing and uploading digital-only content. Interact with web management and marketing team.
Liaise with marketing department on inserts or outserts for print magazine.
Liaise with sales staff on advertisement formats and placement in print magazine.
Coordinate/supervise activities of external vendors, including freelance copy editors, design, print, reprint, and postage/shipping vendors, to ensure projects are on scope, within budget, and delivered on time.
Interact with association member committee and other contributors for follow up on pending content, and to assist with identifying topics and themes for magazine issues and to perform reviews as needed.
Attend bimonthly meetings of Pharmaceutical Engineering committee and occasional travel to conferences to cover conference sessions (including drafting articles for the magazine) and to make contacts with potential authors.
Produce/update style guide for magazines in sync with overall brand specifications for association content.
Miscellaneous production tasks including processing nondisclosure and copyright release forms and sending print magazine copies to authors and advertisers.
Qualifications, Knowledge, and Skills:
Bachelor's degree in journalism, communications, or similar field.
7+ five years of magazine or journal editorial and production experience; scholarly publishing experience is strongly preferred.
Experience with STEM content through publications work or education/training.
Experience with nonprofit organizations.
Experience with ScholarOne or other journal production and peer review systems.
Superior organizational and detail skills, including the ability to set and maintain schedules and deadlines and handle concurrent tasks.
Outstanding editing skills, including proofreading, copyediting, and substantive editing.
Experience managing freelance, design, print, and shipping vendors.
Demonstrated expertise in managing complex projects with shifting priorities and involvement of multiple stakeholders.
Fast learner who embraces opportunities to take the initiative and help to build a magazine’s content and brand.
Ability to deal tactfully with volunteer authors, peer reviewers, and association members. Ability to work in a fast paced, team-oriented environment with high expectations.
Familiarity with Chicago Manual of Style.
Moderate to advanced skills in the Microsoft Office suite, especially Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and SharePoint.
Ability to travel occasionally and attend the annual conference and other conferences throughout the year.
Telecommuting is allowed.
