The Investigative Reporting Workshop (IRW) is an independent newsroom at the American University School of Communication. IRW pairs experienced professional reporters/editors with graduate students to conduct in-depth, long-form journalism on such issues as politics, the environment, health, criminal justice, national security, immigration, and the economy. These investigations are co-published across print, web, television, and radio with major media partners and nonprofit news organizations, including the Washington Post, NPR, and Reveal. IRW also co-produces documentaries for PBS’s Emmy and Peabody award-winning series FRONTLINE. Founded in 2008 by Charles Lewis, IRW is one of the largest and most innovative university-based newsrooms in the country. Lewis is a 1998 MacArthur Fellow, former producer at ABC News and CBS News “60 Minutes,” and founder of two Pulitzer Prize-winning nonprofit news organizations, the Center for Public Integrity and the International Consortium of Investigative Journalists.
The Business & Operations Coordinator for the Investigative Reporting Workshop ensures that the center’s comprehensive business activities run seamlessly by overseeing office systems and supporting faculty-journalists, staff, students, freelancers, and consultants with professional and programmatic needs. Oversees 5-10 student interns and part-time administrative assistants.

This position is 100% supported by external (grant and gift) funding
Position Type/Expected Hours of Work
$22.50 - $27.00/hr
Required Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree equivalent
2-4 years of relevant experience
Previous office/program management experience
Previous finances/accounting experience
Proficient computer skills, especially Microsoft Office suite
Highly organized and detail oriented
Proactive and able to work with minimal supervision
Strong attention to detail
Excellent written and verbal communication skills
Basic knowledge of development/fundraising
Preferred Education and Experience
3-5 years of relevant experience
