General Summary/ Purpose:
Under the supervision of the Associate Dean for Development and External Relations, the Director of Constituent Engagement will oversee and direct outreach, programming, annual giving solicitation and stewardship strategies for the approximately 22,000 alumni of the Johns Hopkins School of Education. S/he will develop new alumni relations program initiatives; explore opportunities to strengthen existing programs; manage and supervise the Assistant Director of Constituent Engagement and the Senior Special Events coordinator, and evaluate staff deployment as appropriate. Additionally, s/he will direct the campaign to raise unrestricted annual donations from alumni and friends of the school. This position requires proven management and organizational skills, strong oral and written communication skills, an enthusiasm for working with people, the ability to manage many projects simultaneously involving alumni volunteers, and a sense of humor. An understanding of and commitment to fundraising are essential.

The Primary Duties and Responsibilities of the Job:
The Director of Constituent Engagement will oversee the annual campaign to raise unrestricted annual donations for the School of Education. Specific duties to include:
Work with the Associate Dean to set annual goals and tactics.
In coordination with the JHU Office of Annual Giving, design a comprehensive plan and ensure its effective execution.
Manage and work with Assistant Director of Constituent Engagement to draft all annual appeals and thankyou letters for the Dean and Associate Dean.
Identify new prospects annually through alumni and friends cultivation activities.
Manage 25-50 Annual Giving leadership prospects; solicit gifts in the range of $1,000 to $25,000 with a goal of raising $75,000 annually and target goal of $100,000 for Annual Fund.
In concert with Associate Dean and other Sr. Associate Director of Development identify and execute comprehensive strategies to move prospects through major gifts pipeline.
Work with the Assistant Director of Development Communications, and Administrative Coordinator to manage the stewardship process for the School of Education.
May also be assigned long term gift planning prospects.
This position will be responsible for the overall management of the School of Education’s alumni programming. Specifically, the Associate/Sr. Associate Director of Constituent Engagement will:
Advise the Associate Dean on matters pertaining to alumni relations and program development, strategically developing programs to serve the larger fundraising goals of the school.
Serve as primary liaison to the Johns Hopkins University Alumni Relations Office, manage and coordinate the SOE’s Alumni Association Alumni Council membership and award nominations, Alumni Trustee nominations, and collaborative regional programming. Attend Leadership Weekend and Executive Committee meetings, providing staff support to the SOE representatives to the Johns Hopkins Alumni Council.
Direct and supervise alumni communications in coordination with the Associate Dean, SOE communications and development managers, Assistant Director of Constituent Engagement. Work with Associate Dean and Communication’s Manager to provide guidance on alumni storylines and profiles. Review articles for website, news, and print newsletter and produce videos for web and social media. Supervise assistant director and provide direction to web specialist to ensure timely updates of website, and production of enews and email blasts.
In concert with the Director of Student Affairs, provide staff support to student/alumni volunteer organizations, including the Student and Alumni Counseling Association, the Public Safety Leadership Association, Phi Delta Kappa, and Chi Sigma Iota.
With the Associate Dean and Sr. Director of Development, plan a comprehensive calendar of events and supervise the events specialist in his/her management and execution of them.
Represent the alumni office at various activities and events and at internal meetings. Make presentations at regional events on the School and opportunities for engagement with SOE.
Manage the overall alumni events strategy, process and implementation in coordination with the senior special events coordinator and SOE DAR staff.
Bachelor’s degree required, Master’s degree preferred. Five years of related experience required in development, annual giving and alumni relations in higher education or comparable in addition to relevant experience in a nonprofit or private sector institution required.
Knowledge of annual giving, and alumni and donor relations, preferably in a higher education environment. Strong written communications skills, with the ability to draft persuasive correspondence. A proven track record of building programs and motivating staff and volunteers. Highly detail- oriented with strong organizational and project management skills, including the ability to manage to deadline and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
Knowledge of events planning and management for small and large groups.
Must be adept at working effectively with diverse constituent groups and senior institutional staff. Strong public speaking/verbal communications skills, with the ability to make one-on-one and group presentations. Strong computer skills, to include Microsoft Office applications, facility with ALADIN database, and content management software, or willingness and aptitude to learn such programs. Supervisory experience. Knowledge of basic budget management for programs and events. Ability to travel for business required.
