This is a tenure-track, twelve- month, engaged faculty appointment. Candidates must have a Ph.D. or other terminal degree, relevant teaching experience, and evidence of both scholarly and applied research. The strongest candidates will have extensive experience working in or consulting with local/state government agencies and/or the nonprofit sector. Candidates should be comfortable working in an applied research environment that involves collaborating with professional staff, students and diverse external partners to plan and execute funded research projects. The faculty member hired for this position is expected to be directly involved in applied research projects external to the University.
The School features a Master of Public Administration (delivered in three formats—on-campus, executive, and online), Master of Science in Environmental Studies, undergraduate certificate in Environmental Studies, graduate certificate in Environmental Sustainability, Honors Tutorial Program in Environmental Studies, and undergraduate certificate in Entrepreneurship (in collaboration with the College of Business).
The School has a robust professional and executive education platform through the Voinovich Academy for Excellence in Public Service. The Voinovich Academy offers a diverse array of professional education programming to state agencies (e.g. Ohio Dept. of Transportation, Ohio Environmental Protection Agency) and local governments (e.g. City of Dublin, City of Hilliard). In conjunction with the Ohio Economic Development Association and JobsOhio, the School created the Ohio Economic Development Institute to offer the Ohio Certified Economic Developer (Ohio CED) credential to economic development practitioners.
The Voinovich School works across all sectors – government, corporate, and nonprofit – and involves students with faculty and professionals in making a real, practical difference. The School houses transformative, boots-on-the-ground programs across three diverse focus areas: 1) entrepreneurship and economic development; 2) health, education, prevention, and social entrepreneurship; and 3) environmental education and research. In 2017, the School worked on 150+ projects with grant and state appropriation funding in excess of $9.2 million. Having been engaged in this work for more than 30 years, the Voinovich School faculty and professional staff have established longstanding partnerships with multiple local, state, and federal agencies. The current grants and contracts portfolio include projects supported by federal agencies (e.g. U.S. Economic Development Administration, Appalachian Regional Commission, Small Business Administration, U.S. Department of Energy), state agencies (e.g. the Ohio Departments of Mental Health and Addiction Services, Education, Development, Health and many other), and multiple local government, nonprofit, and private entities. Through this work, the Voinovich School leverages the resources of the university to further economic growth, social impact, leadership and engagement.
Without respect to the field/subfield, the Voinovich School is seeking the best applied scholar to join our team. This applied scholar will bring experience working with governments/nonprofits, understand our engagement mission, and be prepared to actively work and develop an applied research portfolio with our Ohio-based governments and nonprofits. We are particularly interested in candidates with teaching, consulting, and applied research experience. For example, areas of experience and research interest may include, but are certainly not limited to, nonprofit management, philanthropy, public management, social entrepreneurship, innovation, public health, economic development, evaluation, or any relevant field that meets the School's broad focus areas. We are seeking candidates with experience and interest in interdisciplinary research and engaging students in applied learning experiences. Candidates with experience and interest in applied research and consulting related to rural communities are encouraged to apply. Senior Associate Professors are encouraged to apply.
Non-traditional candidates with a related professional degree and with 5 or more years of relevant teaching and scholarly/applied research experience and academic credentials may also apply and may be considered.
The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the School's extensive, externally-funded applied research portfolio, develop an applied research program, and teach and mentor undergraduate and graduate students at the School. The successful candidate will be expected to develop courses and teach in the School's newly launched Online MPA program in addition to teaching in the on-campus and professional education programs and the Voinovich Academy for Excellence in Public Service. The successful candidate will also be expected to contribute to the School's growing non-degree leadership development program where appropriate.
