This position directs Carolina Performing Arts’ new Creative Futures initiative, a four-year Andrew W. Mellon Foundation-funded initiative with the aim of establishing a new model for community engagement through artistic creation. Creative Futures is comprised of a series of multi-year projects through which we will engage artists, communities, faculty, and students in co-creative partnerships. Informed by scholarship and research, these partnerships will empower communities to express their creativity and channel relevant issues, enrich university teaching and learning, and pioneer a new model for commissioning work. The Program Director for Creative Futures will report to Carolina Performing Arts’ Director of Programming.
Primary functions of this position include executing a complex and transformative grant in the context of a long-term relationship with a major international funder, supporting the development and sustainability of diverse co-creative teams which include visiting artists, UNC faculty, and community members, and directing related student and faculty initiatives.
Expected outcomes of Creative Futures include empowerment of communities to leverage and benefit from collective self-expression, public engagement with identified communities, artistic representation of faculty research and teaching, and deepening of undergraduate investment in the arts and local communities.
Education & Experience
Relevant bachelor’s degree required. All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.
At least three years of work experience in nonprofit administration is required, with a focus on the arts and/or engagement in a higher education environment preferred. Experience working with grant-funded programs in the arts and a deep knowledge of the local Chapel Hill community and surrounding Triangle region are preferred. Advanced degree in related field preferred.
The successful candidate will possess many of the following skills and attributes: excellent communication and interpersonal skills with individuals and groups from diverse backgrounds; ability to work in a team and maintain collaborative relationships within Carolina Performing Arts and with faculty and staff at a variety of levels across the University; creativity to develop connections between the research and teaching missions of the University, artists, and community partners; knowledge of academic department or curricula administration and research-intensive university environments; expertise in program development, documentation, assessment, and evaluation; skills in making presentations, public speaking, and facilitating discussions; ability to manage complex tasks/projects with a high degree of independence; familiarity with common technologies in higher education and with social media; and strong managerial, fiscal, and administrative abilities particularly in relation to grants.
