UMSI is seeking a Research Area Specialist in culture-based STEM education. This position will report to Dr. Ron Eglash, Professor of Information, and will be part of a team conducting research on developing and delivering culturally responsive curricula in urban K-12 classrooms.

The successful applicant will have a proven track record in the ability to engage underrepresented youth in STEM outreach activities. In addition to conducting research, the position requires dissemination of findings through both frequent publishing and conference speaking.
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
Conduct outreach and collaborations with K-12 teachers, community members, software developers, and other stakeholders
Develop and conduct mixed-methods research and randomized quasi experimental studies.
Conduct professional development workshops for K-12 teachers using culturally responsive curriculum.
Plan and deliver both in school and after school programming that engages underrepresented youth in the STEM disciplines.
Masters in Education, Social Science, Information Science, or related discipline.
Demonstrated knowledge of and interest in development of K-12 STEM education.
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Ability to interact with individuals from diverse backgrounds
Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work as part of a cohesive team, and individually while meeting set deadlines.
Extensive knowledge of mixed methods and quasi experimental methodologies.
Communication - Demonstrates effective verbal, written, listening, and presentation communication skills. Effectively communicates with those with differing opinions and differing levels of understanding
Building relationships/interpersonal skills - Values organizational diversity; treats others with respect; promotes cooperation; effectively manages relationships. Maintains positive relationships inside and outside of work group, manages differences constructively.
1-2 years of experience in a related research role, including familiarity with STEM education concepts, data analysis, and project management
Ability to develop culturally responsive curriculum and lesson plans for K-12 STEM classrooms
Experience working with government, nonprofit, and academic stakeholders
Punctual, regular, and consistent attendance is required. May require working during non-business hours and on weekends.
