Annie Wright Schools (AWS), a private, nonprofit Preschool-Grade 12 school located in Tacoma, Washington, seeks a Head of the Qingdao program to run its new English immersion school in Qingdao, China.
AWS is embarking on a joint venture with Baishan School, located in Qingdao, to offer a unique, International Baccalaureate (IB) academic program. The Head of the Qingdao program for the Qingdao campus will establish and lead the AWS program for local Qingdao students. This position resides in Qingdao and will report directly to the Head of Annie Wright Schools in Tacoma and the CFO of Baishan Education Group in Qingdao.
The AWS Baishan program will launch in the fall of 2019 with approximately 50 students in Grades 9 and 10. Additional grades will be added in 2020 and 2021, with an eventual enrollment of 160-180 students. The Head of School position is a wonderful opportunity for a proven school leader to start and grow an entirely new program based on the AWS culture and academic philosophy in one of the “most livable” of Chinese cities - Qingdao.
HISTORY OF THE SCHOOLS
Founded in 1884, AWS educates 566 boys and girls from Preschool to Grade 12. The Upper School students are educated in single gender classes – a coordinate model. The Upper School in Qingdao will be co-educational, in an inquiry-based and nurturing environment. In 2010 AWS was authorized as an International Baccalaureate World School, offering the gold standard Diploma Programme for Upper School students. The IB Primary Years Programme followed in 2015 and Middle Years Programme 2017. Baishan Education Group (BEG), established in 1993, founded the first private school in China’s Shandong province. BEG currently comprises Baishan School (PS-8), Qingdao Amerasia International School (an IB World School), a Montessori school and a Montessori teacher training academy. There has been a close relationship between AWS and Baishan School since an exchange program began in 1996.
Qingdao is a port city on the west coast of the Yellow Sea, facing the Korean peninsula, with a population of around 9 million. Roughly equidistant between Beijing and Shanghai, it is surrounded by mountains and overlooks the ocean. It is attractive, largely pollution-free and has been identified by the Chinese Academy of Sciences as the most livable city in China (2015). CURRICULUM The Grade 9 program will blend the AWS and Baishan Grade 9 programs. This will allow students to complete their Chinese middle school education. The Grades 10-12 programs will align with the AWS program. Students will also benefit from the best of Chinese educational practices, specifically in the areas of math and science. The IB Diploma Programme will comprise the curriculum for Grades 11-12. Students will graduate with an Annie Wright Schools, Qingdao high school diploma. The majority of students will matriculate into US colleges and universities.
