Reporting to the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), the Director of Development and Grants Manager will serve as a key leadership team member and an active participant in making strategic decisions affecting HSNHC. In partnership with the CEO, this position will be responsible for all fundraising, development, and grant making activities.
The Director will be responsible for building HSNHC’s capacity for long-term sustainable fundraising through the creation and implementation of a comprehensive development plan and building the staffing and infrastructure necessary to support a mature, robust development program and undertake an eventual capital campaign to fund the cost of the new facility. The successful candidate will also help to forge new relationships to build HSNHC’s visibility, impact, and financial resources within both the immediate and Greater Boston communities.
Ability to construct, articulate, and implement annual strategic development plan.
Actively work with the CEO and senior staff to develop and implement a comprehensive development strategy across all fundraising sources/programs, including sponsorships, annual giving, major gifts, federal and state grants, corporations, foundations, and special events.
Support and partner with the CEO and board members on all major fundraising initiatives.
Establish, expand, and diversify HSNHC’s donor base/pipeline and work closely with other team members to secure funding for new initiatives.
Develop and implement a stewardship program aimed at cultivating deeper ties with donors.
Analyze donor trends and present statistical analysis to board and senior management and donors at regular intervals.
Work with internal and external stakeholders to build the visibility of the organization and convey the importance of its mission.
Responsibility for the development and execution of all grant proposals and reports with the input of senior management.
Monitor and report regularly on the progress of the development program.
Work closely with the board of directors to activate and support them in their efforts to advance the development agenda.
Create and maintain a strong brand identity for the organization through consistent messaging and a compelling voice across a broad array of communication mediums.
Oversee all development operations; create and implement best practices, policies, and procedures necessary for the effective running of HSNHC’s development office.
Represent HSNHC at relevant events and meetings.
Periodically assess necessary staffing needs to ensure that the development strategy can be fully and successfully executed.
Hire, supervise, coach, and mentor future development team members to successfully achieve goals set forth in the annual strategic development plan.
Bachelor's degree required; Master's preferred
A minimum of five to seven years of professional experience with a nonprofit organization that ideally shows progressive responsibility and a demonstrated track record of success in a development function (managing and forging relationships with multiple donor sources).
A professional fundraising certificate a plus, but not a requirement.
Previous work experience with community health/health care organization a plus, but not a requirement.
Substantial experience of having established a development function in a successful nonprofit organization.
A successful track record of providing strategic direction, leadership, and daily management of comprehensive giving programs.
Experience with major gift fundraising, including prospect moves management, with a proven track record of success securing six- and seven-figure gifts
Demonstrated experience with private foundations and government grants, including researching, grant writing, and reporting.
Excellent communication skills, both written and oral.
Ability to influence and engage a wide range of donors and build long-term relationships.
Knowledge of and broad connections with leaders and members of Greater Boston’s civic, philanthropic, and nonprofit institutions strongly preferred.
Flexible and adaptable style; a leader who can positively impact both strategic and tactical fundraising initiatives.
Aptitude for working both independently without close oversight, but also as a member of a team who will productively engage with others at varying levels of seniority both within and outside of HSNHC.
Strong entrepreneurial spirit and ability to thrive in a small shop.
High energy and passion for HSNHC’s mission.
Strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail.
Ability to work occasional nights and/or weekends.

Harvard Neighborhood Health Center (HSNHC), first opened for business in 1969 at 895 Blue Hill Avenue as part of the Boston Department of Health and Hospitals. In 1976, HSNHC became an independent, non-profit and relocated its main office to 632 Blue Hill Avenue. Designated as a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) Look-Alike health center in 1992, HSNHC continues to provide comprehensive system of care that is responsive to our community’s health care needs.
