Facing History and Ourselves is an international nonprofit organization that equips educators with the content, skills, and tools to teach middle and high school students about the consequences of racism, antisemitism, and violence.
As a member of the Content Development team, the Senior Editor will play a key role in helping the organization scale its impact by developing educational resources that support Facing History’s unique pedagogical approach while meeting the needs of teachers and students. The Senior Editor will work with staff curriculum developers, freelance writers, and subject matter experts to develop and edit educational content and curriculum, ensuring quality, appropriateness, and adherence to project specifications. In partnership with the Editorial Director, s/he will shape Facing History’s digital curriculum agenda by re-imagining re-imagining print-based content for delivery and dissemination on the web, and developing new, digital-first products. And s/he will participate in planning and brainstorming meetings about how Facing History resources can best meet national and international educational priorities (e.g., different standards movements, social–emotional learning, literacy, IB etc.) or how they can be adapted to meet district or regional mandates.

Facing History and Ourselves plays a critical role internationally in advancing civic engagement and promoting ethical decision-making while supporting educators’ professional growth through professional development and coaching. The Content Development team is a small staff with a large reach. Innovative and entrepreneurial, we constantly look for better ways to serve our teachers, our schools, and their students. We work closely with our Program Associates in the field and partner with teachers from across our network to develop materials for the classroom that inspire students to make essential connections between the choices people and governments made in history or literature and the choices we face today.
Who you are
You are an exceptional writer and editor who is passionate about our mission and excited to work with the wide range of issues, histories, works of literature, and current events that comprise our editorial portfolio. You share our passion for using the humanities to help adolescents practice ethical reflection and become civically engaged. You are experienced using digital-first methods to create content and can contribute to and thrive in an organization expanding the platforms it uses to deliver high-quality content and professional development to teachers and students. You have experience editing digital and print-based curriculum materials for middle and high school teachers and their students with diverse learning styles, abilities, and backgrounds.
At least 5 to 7 years experience editing and writing educational content in the History, Social Studies, and/or Humanities disciplines.
Superior writing and editing skills.
Demonstrated experience in developing instructional materials for the education market and a solid knowledge of educational publishing workflows and processes.
Experience working with internal and freelance writers to create and adapt content to meet goals, including how to create and adapt content for a range of digital formats and platforms.
Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment with competing priorities, and to prioritize and juggle multiple projects and timelines.
Strong interest in instructional technology and digital media
Organized and highly detail-oriented.
Ability to work well as part of a team, and to be self-directed and able to work independently with minimal supervision.
Excellent communication skills and ability to work with a wide variety of people with different proficiency levels.
Understanding of a CMS; experience with Drupal preferred but not required.
Teaching experience a plus.
