The American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS) in Arlington, VA, a professional scientific society, seeks a Controller to oversee all finance related activities for AAPS. Activities include financial planning, budgeting, financial reporting, tax compliance, risk management, oversight of overall accounting functions and internal controls. The Controller is responsible for the organization’s financial planning and accounting practices, as well as its relationship with banking and investment institutions by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate managers. The Controller supervises the finance staff and relevant contractors and consultants.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Plan, implement, direct and evaluate the association's fiscal function and performance;
Develop and oversee annual budget development process;
Provide timely and accurate analysis of budgets, financial reports, financial trends and financial projections to the Executive Director and Staff as needed;
Establish, monitor, and enforce internal controls, risk management and insurance coverage for protection against property losses and potential liabilities;
Manage finance staff and oversee all functions related to accounts payable and accounts receivable;
Oversee the preparation and issuance of the association's annual audited financial statements;
Establish and oversee contract management procedures;
Direct the banking relationship, evaluate appropriateness of cash management including lockbox, checking accounts, cash balances, controls, and protect cash and investment balances with adequate insurance;
Manage investment activities, investment policy, and selection of fund managers, in consultation with Executive Director including appropriately balancing all aspects of risk v. return and evaluating risk v. return on an on-going basis; and
Serve as staff liaison to assigned AAPS Committees as needed.
Strong record of accomplishments necessary.
Proven ability to manage multiple functions, deadlines, and diverse finance related activities.
Thorough knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles.
Advanced knowledge of accounting, Excel, Word, and Great Plains software.
Familiarity with membership database software and its integration with accounting software
Knowledge of contract management software.
Understanding of online payment systems.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Proven ability to manage finance staff.
Education and/or Experience
Bachelor's degree in accounting or related discipline. Master’s degree preferred.
Certified Public Accountant (CPA) required.
Minimum ten years of relevant senior level management experience in public accounting, for-profit or nonprofit business settings.
Majority of work is performed on a personal computer sitting at a desk for long periods of time throughout the day. May be expected to lift boxes up to 15 pounds. Travel required for specific meetings throughout the year. Standing for long periods of time and walking at meetings is required. Ability to remain professional in stressful and crisis situations is critical.
Work is performed in a fast-paced, high volume, detail oriented environment. The work environment is a moderately open one, with a combination of cubicles and offices. The noise level will vary from quiet to loud. Some travel is required.
