DataArts, The National Center for Arts Research (Center) at Southern Methodist University, seeks an Associate Director focused on research. The Associate Director for Research reports to the Director and works closely with the Research Director and Deputy Director.
With the senior leadership team, s/he will plan for and execute the organization's applied research agenda and priorities. S/he will manage the ongoing review and improvement of survey instruments and the development and reporting of integrated field surveys conducted on behalf of national arts service organizations.
The Associate Director for Research will also identify and forge strategic research and data partnerships to support field-wide data standards and create new opportunities for collaborative, data-driven initiatives, products, and services.
Conduct survey design, research design and sampling, and analysis of quantitative datasets (e.g., merging, mapping, coding, and conducting a variety of statistical analyses);
Prepare high quality applied research reports and white papers, with thoughtful and clear written and visual interpretations of the data.
Identify and forge strategic research and data partnerships to support field-wide data standards and create new opportunities for collaborative, data-driven initiatives, products, and services.
Present Center findings at conferences, contribute to the Center's website and social media platforms. Advance the Center's reputation in the field.
Actively engage in the national dialogue about issues, trends, and emerging practices related to arts and culture.
Pursue and generate earned revenue from contracted studies. Meet the research and analysis needs of grantmakers.
Manage projects to meet deadlines.
Provide direction and leadership to the Center’s Research Associate and part-time graduate research fellows and interns in executing those priorities to advance the Center’s research agenda
Education and Experience:
Masters degree is required, preferably in Arts Management, Marketing, Statistics, Data Science, or Cultural Economics. PhD is desirable.
A minimum of three years of work experience is required.
Experience in a research or consulting firm managing multiple client projects is preferred.
Demonstrated knowledge of the field of nonprofit arts and culture is highly desirable.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Candidate must demonstrate strong verbal and interpersonal communication skills, as well as the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with a wide range of constituencies in a diverse community. Must also demonstrate the ability to derive and communicate meaningful, actionable insights from data and to make complex information clear. Strong writing skills and demonstrated ability in applied research report preparation are essential. Oral and written proficiency in English is required.
The ability translate research to a general audience and to engage research partners is essential. Experience developing program partnerships is desirable.
Candidate must possess strong organizational and project management skills to effectively prioritize and achieve deadlines on multiple projects. Must also be a self-starter with the ability to work independently with minimal supervision and collaboratively within a team environment. A strong focus on attention to detail and accuracy is essential.
Candidate must possess the ability to undertake statistical analysis and present the information in narrative descriptions and graphical models is essential. Must also possess the ability to work with large and complex datasets. A strong knowledge of quantitative analysis is essential
Candidate must possess professional fluency in SAS. Must also demonstrate a strong proficiency in MS Excel with the ability write formulas, format tables, and create pivot tables.
Candidate must possess a strong working knowledge of MS Office (Word, PowerPoint, Access) in order to prepare reports and presentations.
Candidate must possess the ability to quickly learn new applications. Demonstrated technical aptitude is essential. Experience with and or knowledge of Tableau and ARC GIS a plus.
