Acumen is looking for an experienced and entrepreneurial fundraiser to lead their Business Development team in San Francisco. We’re looking for someone with 10-15 years’ experience in philanthropic fundraising and relationship management; someone who has exceptional communication, team building and execution skills, who thrives in complexity and has a proven commitment to addressing social, environmental and educational issues. You will report directly to the Chief of Business Development.
Drive and execute a West Coast fundraising campaign strategy that includes the Bay Area, Los Angeles and Seattle
Build strategic institutional and corporate relationships with key institutional donors and develop multi year engagement plans
Partner with Acumen’s program leads to expand our pipeline and develop pitch proposals
Determine approach and increasing fundraising capacity from high-net worth prospects, particularly within the Bay area
Secure public- speaking opportunities with select partner/prospect groups;
Identify and take part in key conferences
Organize and execute prospect cultivation events/networking events as necessary, leveraging our existing Partner communities, particularly within the Bay area
Management and Leadership
Set strategic vision for West Coast business development team
Manage West Coast Business Development Associate
Drive partner communications; assist in the profiling of partners and ensuring that they receive correspondence on interest areas in a timely manner
Work with the global teams to implement our strategy to reach annual fundraising targets
Qualifications & Characteristics:
Candidates for the Head of Business Development: West Coast role should have a passionate commitment to Acumen’s mission and business model.
Given Acumen’s entrepreneurial culture, the candidate must be a self-starter who thrives under tight deadlines, is curious and analytical, and is comfortable managing both within and across teams.
You are a detailed-oriented, savvy communicator who is comfortable with launching and supporting fundraising campaigns.
You are thoughtful in seeking out new relationships with foundations, corporations and individuals, and are also skilled in developing meaningful partnerships, with a proven track record in engaging partners, inspiring them to support your work and further building the relationship for the long-term.
You can provide assistance to colleagues doing the same by playing a key support role to other team members when needed. We have a small and energetic team, and this is a roll-up-your-sleeves kind of role.

10-15 years of work experience in philanthropic business development and/or relationship management.
Some experience working in developing economies or the impact investing sector is a plus.
A track record of involvement in building and maintaining strategic funding relationships.
Ability to bridge the gap between the nonprofit and for-profit worlds.
A strategic view: an ability to grasp the entirety of the Acumen ecosystem - its purpose, its history, the myriad of stakeholders, its emerging direction, and the goals that support that direction.
An ability to balance big picture, strategic thinking with tactical productivity and attention to detail; to operationalize that strategic view by developing partners with a shared agenda.
Solid operational skills including problem solving and project management skills, including the ability to work and deliver projects independently and proactively.
Exceptional interpersonal skills and demonstrated success in building collaborative relationships with both external and internal stakeholders
Effective storyteller who consistently communicates (oral, written) in a compelling manner
A willingness to take risks and ability to address complex issues creatively and effectively.
Effectively collaborates with and across teams, seeks and provides constructive feedback.
Experience inspiring and leading a small high-performing team but also hands-on in both attitude and prior experience.
