EDUCAUSE (http://www.educause.edu), a highly creative, entrepreneurial, national nonprofit association whose mission is to advance higher education through the use of information technology, invites applications for the position of Digital Managing Editor to support its award-winning magazine EDUCAUSE Review. Our Digital Managing Editor is responsible for the day-to-day online editorial production of EDUCAUSE Review, managing multiple projects in a fast-paced and collaborative, cross-organizational working environment. This is a full-time, exempt position with the preferred work location in the Boulder (Louisville), Colorado, office, though out-of-state candidates will be considered with the possibility for a remote-work position.
EDUCAUSE Review is the association's open-access digital and print flagship publication for the higher education IT community. With 22,000 distributed copies, the print magazine looks at current developments and trends in information technology, how they may affect the college/university as an institution, and what they mean for higher education and society. The online-only version offers broader coverage, including the content of the print magazine plus additional feature articles, blogs, and multimedia about managing and using information resources in higher education. The publication has won numerous editorial and design awards.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Partner with magazine editor-in-chief to manage daily workflow and scheduling of the online magazine.
Create and maintain the editorial calendars.
Edit and proofread articles, blog posts, and other written materials on both a recurring and an as-needed basis.
Correspond with writers and freelance editors throughout the editing/production process while also procuring administrative details necessary for publication.
Assist in determining content topics and sourcing authors.
Coordinate with the marketing team and editors to ensure the magazine content is reflected in promotional elements.
Work closely with editors, member volunteers, and staff authors to create online content.
Create digitally native content such as infographics, videos, interactive experiences, data visualization, and photo essays.
Monitor and report on web presence and traffic; use data and metrics to inform and guide story structure, focus, format, creation, and engagement
Optimize content for distribution, SEO, and all social channels
Work with the association's multiple constituencies as required to ensure the magazine meets members’ needs; assist in management of member advisory committee with other editorial staff
Research and Strategy
Stay abreast of emerging technology and content-distribution methods; manage the pipeline of editorially related improvements, in collaboration with the editor-in-chief and the other staff
Work with the magazine editor-in-chief and the corporate team to propose revenue-generating enhancements and products; conceive new editorial and magazine products based on readers’ needs and market insights
Education and Experience
A bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience
At least 5 years of demonstrated online editorial experience with exceptional editing, proofreading, writing, and digital media skills
A minimum of 2 years of previous experience working in the day-to-day production of an online publication
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Experience with sourcing authors, working with editors, and keeping an editorial calendar
Knowledge of editorial processes and style guidelines
Ability to prioritize and focus under fast-paced pressure while managing multiple tasks and projects; ability to be flexible and meet deadlines in a fluid environment with shifting priorities
Troubleshooting and problem-solving skills, both editorially and technologically
Strong proficiency in the use of digital technology
Strong skills in using analytics and metrics to drive consumption, SEO, and social engagement
Proven editorial instincts with close attention to detail
Well-developed process/project management skills; sound decision-making skills coupled with the ability to craft creative solutions to editorial challenges
Intellectual curiosity and passion for educational content and an eagerness to stay abreast of the ever-changing nature of software tools
Extremely organized and able to work independently
Knowledge of the U.S. higher education market
Experience with Google analytics dashboards
Experience with online CMS platforms such as Sitecore

Limited travel required to support EDUCAUSE conferences/events, team operations, and external events relevant to the position.
