About Northwestern Settlement
The Northwestern University Settlement House has existed for 125 years in order to help families and individuals in its community overcome generational poverty. Founded in 1891 by leaders of Northwestern University, the original Settlement model involved settling in a needy community and recruiting university volunteers to live and work at the house empowering community residents to change their own lives. Today, although our methods of service have changed, the Settlement continues to provide transformational opportunities for society’s disenfranchised and impoverished families. Through a comprehensive system of support, the Settlement addresses a family’s basic needs with our food pantry and emergency services while preparing the next generation for economic independence through the foundation of a quality education.
