Chicago Commons is seeking for School Director and currently has available 2 openings at 2 different schools, one in the West side of Chicago and one at Back of the yards.
Founded in 1894, Chicago Commons was one of Chicago’s original settlement houses serving immigrants on Chicago’s northwest side. Today, Chicago Commons is a nonprofit organization whose mission is to partner with individuals, families and communities to overcome poverty, discrimination and isolation. To fulfill that mission, Chicago Commons provides high-quality early childhood education, family-centered adult education, and senior services to more than 3,000 individuals annually.
Chicago Commons’ Early Childhood Education Programs are Reggio inspired program that implement a problem-solving approach to learning, provide unique engaging environments, include extensive art studios and provide outdoor play through nature based playgrounds. The Early Childhood Programs serve as the backbone of many at-risk Chicago communities, including West Humboldt Park, Pilsen, Bronzeville, and New City (Back of the Yards). These neighborhoods are impacted by high rates of poverty and limited educational and economic resources. Chicago Commons seeks to help families obtain the skills, resources and education needed to break the cycle of poverty.
POSITION OVERVIEW – SCHOOL DIRECTOR
The School Director reports to the Vice President of Education and Programs. The School Director will be responsible for staff performance and personnel management, school enrollment, program operations, budget management, facilities management of the school, compliance with contracts, and community relations.
Candidates must have a passion for creating a safe and nurturing environment for children to receive a quality education, and outstanding people skills to be able to grow and maintain relationships with Families. S/he must have extensive knowledge of child development and Head Start/Early Head Start Performance Standards and requirements. Excellent leadership skills are required, with a minimum of two years of experience in a supervisory role. S/he must have a bachelor’s in early childhood education, child development or school administration and be eligible for Gateways Illinois Directors Credential. A master’s degree in the early childhood field is preferred.
Assures compliance with all city, state and federal regulations
Responsible for ther recruitment of eligible children, developing a school specific plan to ensure that the school is fully enrolled and meets funder requirements
Interprets the child development program to parents, families and the community
Creates partnerships with other agencies and corporations in the community.
Responsible for the hiring of teachers at the school in collaboration with the School Management Team.
Leads new staff orientation/onboarding, and file compliance
Oversee professional development of staff
Ensures classroom teams are creating an atmosphere in which children develop socially, emotionally, intellectually and physically
Ensures the Reggio Emilia philosophy is implemented
Maintain a quality program that meets NAEYC and Excelerate GOLD requirements
Formally observe and evaluate teachers
Manage the school finance to the annual budget
Supervise the maintenance of facilities and program equipment
Establish and maintain effective relationships with parents, implementing a strength based approach with children and families
Contributes to the development of the agency’s child development philosophy and goals
Establishes and maintains an effective working relationship with parents and families, the community and funders
