Friendship Place is nonprofit organization, serving the Washington, DC region, empowering individuals and families experiencing or at risk of homelessness to rebuild their lives with the involvement of the community. Friendship Place offers the most effective model for addressing homelessness, with innovative, customized programs that have positive, demonstrable results and a lasting impact on the community and beyond. Our programs are person-centricand individualized to meet the needs and goals of individuals, families, youth/young adults and Veterans experiencing homelessness. We provide outreach, hospitality, health care, case management, housing, job placement services, and advocacy. We have established a national presence and are known for sharing best practices in the field.
Reporting directly to the Chief Development Officer, the Major Gifts Officer has overall responsibility for managing long-term relationships and potential prospects determined to have the ability to make gifts at the 4-, 5-, and 6-figure level. She or he will be responsible for developing and implementing strategies for securing financial support from individuals. The position will be responsible for identifying, qualifying, cultivating, soliciting, and stewarding major gifts.
The Major Gifts Officer will work collaboratively with and will support the Board, staff, volunteers, and donors.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Fulfill Development Department core budget annual giving goals among individuals. In FY 19, this calls for:
$625,000 in gifts of $10,000 or greater
$450,000 in gifts between $1,000 and $9,999
Maintain an active portfolio of 150 individuals. Outline appropriate strategies to bring individuals to solicitation and closure.
Develop and cultivate relationships with individuals.
Conduct a minimum of 12 prospect/donor visits per month.
Conduct other phone, mail, and email contact.
Create proposals to meet and exceed donor intentions.
Perform prospect research to identify and qualify new major donors.
Work closely with the President/ CEO, Chief Development Officer, Development Staff, Program Directors, Development Committee members, Board of Directors, and other volunteers, to generate new prospects.
Develop and cultivate relationships with volunteers and staff to solicit help when needed, and as appropriate, for specific major gift solicitations.
Assist with and direct the planning and execution of special events designed to engage major donors.
Work with program staff to understand successes and challenges of program to be able to explain them to funders.
Participate in weekly Development Team meetings and monthly Board Development Committee meetings.
Design and provide regular updates to the Chief of Development on dollars raised and prospect pipeline/activities.
Physical and Environmental Requirements
Standard office working conditions, plus an average of 12 or more donors visits per month. It should be presumed one-third of this position will entail travelling to our attend these visits.
Volunteers and interns as needed.

Bachelor's degree required
5-7 years’ experience in non-profit major gift development.
Proven track record of success in:
individual donor cultivation, solicitation and closing of major gifts,
meeting fundraising goals,
achieving significant philanthropic revenue growth and an expanded constituency base
Computer literacy, database and spreadsheet proficiency
Strategic and agile leader.
Strong decision making skills and a strategic thinker
Attention to detail, with the ability to meet deadlines, work under pressure, prioritize, handle multiple and complex projects
Excellent time management and organizational skills with the ability to work well under deadlines
Strong interpersonal skills - possessing energy, initiative, flexibility and talent as a team player and as an individual contributor
Excellent communication skills to effectively support the Chief Development Officer President/CEO, and Board of Directors, and engage prospects, donors, and other diverse constituencies
Impeccable writing skills with a demonstrated ability to write compelling public and private grant proposals
Strong research capacity; ability to interpret, analyze, and represent complex humanitarian issues in donor-friendly language
Knowledge of fundraising principles and ethical requirements
Ability to work flexible hours
