The Position and Key Priorities

Nevertheless, philanthropy and partnerships remain essential to our success. Philanthropic capital enables us to make strategic investments in farmer and worker training and empowerment, consumer activation, expansion into new products, and innovation initiatives. FTUSA is now poised to go to scale, investing significant capital in our global expansion to provide greater impact on the lives of millions of families. The Chief Development Officer (CDO), is a newly created position on our Executive Leadership Team, charged with creating and overseeing the execution of all fundraising strategies and programs. Moreover, the CDO will develop and steward our strategic partnerships in the academic, philanthropic and international development communities. This is a key leadership position that requires someone who is a strategic thinker, a capable relationship manager and accomplished fundraiser.
The Chief Development Officer joins us at a time of momentum and promise. We are currently in the home stretch of our first capital campaign, having raised $21 million toward our $25 million goal. The immediate responsibility of the Chief Development Officer is to finish the capital campaign while laying the foundation for a stronger annual fundraising program. The CDO will have the advantages of working with an experienced board of directors, an energetic and visionary Founder & CEO, and one of the best-known and most effective brands in the nonprofit and social entrepreneurship space.
Reporting directly to the CEO, the CDO will work closely with other members of the leadership team to create philanthropic programs that leverage our network of over 1,300 brands and retail partners and the millions of consumers who support the Fair Trade movement. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in capital campaigns, major gift cultivation, foundation fundraising and organizational leadership. We seek an entrepreneurial thinker with exceptional communications and interpersonal skills who is passionate about making a difference in the world.
Serve on the Executive Leadership Team and contribute to developing and achieving the organization’s overall strategic plan and innovation initiatives.
Lead our efforts to finish the $25mm capital campaign and build a strong annual giving program to fuel growth and innovation.
Create and implement a growth plan to build total development budget to $5 million per year.
Working with the Development team, develop and implement fundraising strategies across multiple channels including major gifts, private foundations, corporate foundations, online donations, multi-lateral development agencies.
Develop and grow our in-kind giving programs with Google, Salesforce and other service providers.
Cultivate, develop and steward our alliances and partnerships with peers.
Represent FTUSA in the philanthropic and international development communities. Provide thought partnership to the field and promote our market-based approach to poverty alleviation and sustainable development.
Develop and manage the department’s staff, work plans, budgets and forecasts.
Supervise the development of proposals, reports and fundraising materials.
Manage and mentor the development team (currently at five).
Support recruitment of new Board and fundraising leadership volunteers.
Required Skills and Experience
10 + years of increasing responsibility in fundraising and partnerships roles.
Experience leading successful capital campaigns.
Successful track record in building mature philanthropic programs with a solid pipeline.
Management of multi-million dollar fundraising programs.
Proven success in personal solicitations and long-term philanthropic relationships.
Outstanding communication skills.
Outstanding people management and organizational skills.
Creativity, flexibility, initiative and humor.
Preferred Skills and Experience
Track record of success in one or more of the following arenas: Major gifts, foundations, individual giving, donor management, corporate sponsorship and online giving.
Familiarity with international development, sustainability, corporate social responsibility and social entrepreneurship.
Master’s degree preferred.
Experience working with Salesforce.
To Be Considered
The position will be based in either Oakland or on the East Coast.
Some domestic and international travel is required.
