NLCO is seeking a Music Director for the adult community orchestra with strong organizational and interpersonal skills who works closely with the musicians, president, and the board of directors, and helps supports all aspects of our artistic and educational mission.
Position Type: Contract position. Reports to board of directors.
Rehearsals by Finalists: September 2018, dates and times TBD
The following are the duties and responsibilities of the Music Director:
Select repertoire appropriate for a small nonprofit community orchestra with a mostly classical emphasis.
Rehearse weekly on Wednesday nights during the orchestra season (September to early June) and conduct season concerts.
Provide appropriate feedback and guidance to orchestra members during rehearsals, coordinating with section leaders as appropriate.
Make arrangements for use of additional instruments as required.
Work closely with the president and board of directors to support the artistic and educational mission of the orchestra.
Attend monthly board meetings as ex officio (non-voting) member of the board.
Assist in coordinating stage logistics with concert venues.
Provide season repertoire, soloist, and rehearsal information to the president and board on a timely basis.
Coordinate with music librarian regarding concert music needs and purchases.
Work within a budget for any fees and music purchases.
Coordinate with Music City Strings teachers and staff in preparing for concert dates.
Assist and support the orchestra’s outreach and educational efforts as necessary, including through involvement with the Music City Strings program.
Bachelor’s degree; master’s degree in music preferred.
Experience conducting an orchestra/ensemble.
Willingness to make a two-year minimum commitment.

An acute ear for orchestral intonation, balance, color, and transposition.
Thorough knowledge of theory, analysis, and repertoire.
Knowledge of orchestral instruments.
Willingness to provide a welcoming and educational environment at rehearsals, work with musicians of all levels, and engage enthusiastically with patrons and audiences.
Familiarity with and enthusiasm for the wealth of repertoire suitable for a community orchestra and available in the public domain
Strong interests in musical education, outreach, and audience development initiatives to help secure the future for orchestral music.

About New London Community Orchestra
The New London Community Orchestra (NLCO) is a 35-member volunteer community orchestra established in 2011. NLCO performs two general audience concerts in New London and two concerts at local senior centers and/or assisted living facilities each year.
The mission of the New London Community Orchestra includes a strong commitment to music education. As part of our mission, we have established Music City Strings, an El Sistema-inspired program offering free violin and cello lessons for local students.
Students from the Music City Strings program participate in our general audience concerts, including playing alongside the adult orchestra for at least one selection at each concert.
