Camp Quest, Inc. seeks a full-time Development Director to join our 501(c)(3) educational nonprofit that supports a growing network of independently operated Camp Quest programs across North America. Camp Quest provides an educational adventure shaped by fun, friends and freethought, featuring science, natural wonder and humanist values. The Development Director is an experienced, creative, well-connected fundraising professional with unbridled enthusiasm to further the mission of Camp Quest and demonstrated success in identifying, cultivating, and stewarding donors. The Development Director creates and leads strategies to increase funding and forms productive relationships with donors, board members, and volunteers. Reporting to the Executive Director, the Development Director manages all development tasks, fosters a network-wide fundraising culture, and supports other operational areas needed to achieve the future expansion and growth of Camp Quest. As Camp Quest’s first Development Director, the individual selected for this position will have significant influence on the progression of this role, which has the potential to expand and change based on the needs of the organization. The position is expected to be self-sustaining within one year of hiring.
The Development Director will join our Executive Director as the two staff members of the Camp Quest Support Center, which is the administrative hub of our national organization. The Camp Quest Support Center offers essential services to camps to help them provide high-quality camp experiences for children and families who seek secular community, education, and adventure. We support the development of new and established camps by providing program and training resources, fundraising support, and working with camps to ensure network-wide program standards. In addition, we foster volunteer development, and coordinate outreach and support through partnerships with organizations that share our values. The Camp Quest Support Center is based in Staunton, VA. The Development Director may work remotely from a home office.
Summary of Responsibilities
Vigorously heighten Camp Quest’s visibility and credibility in philanthropic communities to expand our base of support
Lead and grow our fundraising efforts across all income categories, including individual giving, corporate partners and sponsors, institutional funders, earned income, and both annual and special events
Design, implement, and evaluate all fundraising activities including annual giving, endowment, planned giving, campaigns, events, mobile and online giving
Create a comprehensive grant funding strategy, including researching opportunities, creating compelling proposals, and ensuring complete and accurate applications and reporting
Steward affiliate camp volunteers to determine program funding needs, and coordinate network-wide fundraising activities and relationships
Develop organizational policies and procedures for all development activities, including internal grant and scholarship programs that support affiliate camp programs, with the Executive Director
Serve as a resource and guide for camp volunteers in their fundraising efforts
Model effective fundraising through management, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of current and prospective donors
Develop and manage a portfolio of major giving prospects and donors
Advance key solicitations and the closing of principal gifts
Determine and define donor and sponsor recognition opportunities
Create promotional collateral and implement direct marketing and online campaigns in collaboration with the Executive Director
Support the Executive Director to cultivate relationships with donors, other organizations and institutions to advance Camp Quest
Administration and Operations
Design and implement short- and long-term development plans in partnership with the Executive Director and the National Board of Directors
Create and expand the annual development budget, with focus on revenue/solicitation projections
Prepare development reports for presentation to the board and Development Committee
Create and contribute to other reports, presentations, and mailings, including the Annual Report
Gift processing and daily development tasks, including database management, gift acknowledgement, financial reporting, and management of multiple online giving platforms
Draft funding proposals, stewardship reports, briefings, and other materials as needed, including relevant communications on behalf of the Executive Director
Work with the Executive Director, bookkeeper, and accountant to ensure the effective operation of accounting systems and the meeting of fundraising regulatory requirements
Serve as the staff liaison on the Development Committee
Collaborate closely with the Executive Director on key projects, events, and campaigns throughout the year that support camp programs
Represent Camp Quest at national conferences and events, particularly for fundraising and outreach to potential donors
Perform other duties as assigned by the Executive Director
The candidate will have non-profit experience and proven success in strategic fundraising planning, campaign management, donor stewardship, and in-person major gift solicitation. Given the grassroots nature of our organization and our vision for future growth, experience in both large and small development office settings will be beneficial.
Minimum of a bachelor’s degree with an advanced degree preferred
Demonstrated leadership experience
Exceptional managerial, interpersonal, and communication skills
Must be driven to grow revenue with a positive outlook in an environment of growth and change
Has a strong sense of personal responsibility and ability to work both independently and part of a team
Is capable of building new development practices and negotiating all aspects of change management
Additional preferred qualities of the ideal candidate include:
Strong knowledge of the secular philanthropic community with a demonstrated ability to build strong, mutually beneficial relationships
Experience fundraising for summer camp and/or youth development programs
Desire to learn and expand professional skills and knowledge of fundraising for our federated association of nonprofit camps
High level of writing competency
Advanced computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft Office, and strong knowledge of fundraising database systems
Familiarity with the Association of Fundraising Professionals Code of Ethical Standards and fundraising best practices
Camp Quest headquarters is based in Staunton, Virginia
The candidate may work remotely from a home office
10-25% travel including some weekends for in-person donor meetings, visiting camp locations, attending conferences, and other events, including our Camp Quest Leadership Summit (Nov 2-4, 2018)
Ability to work 2-4 evenings per month for conference calls and meetings

Salary Range DOE: $35,000 - $40,000
Flexible schedule (outside of required meetings/events listed above)
15 days paid time off per year for full-time employees, plus 10 office holidays

Nationwide base of over 400 volunteers from 13 affiliate camp organizations
